Resign one contract start new

My headteacher in discussions last week mentioned I'd have to resign from my ft position and start a pr contract if I wanted to be pt. Anyone know if I'd still have to give terms notice or whether once (if) its agreed I could be pt it could be done immediately?

I moved from a full time contract to a part time contract.

I received a letter confirming variation in hours and new salary (pro rata).

However it's the same employment, same contract, just with variation. No resignation or re-employment needed.

When I went part time I also had a letter confirming the details and remained on the same terms and conditions. No resignation at all here either.

I'm no expert, but are you currently TUPEd or has your school recently joined a MAT/new MAT? I wonder if there's some small print that it was a full time position that was carried across and that a part time position is technically a new role. It sounds a bit unusual to make someone resign and start a new position. In the event of a MAT change then resigning a TUPEd post and being employed on a new MAT contract might also affect your continuous service for the purposes of maternity, sick pay, redundancy etc.
Someone with more experience and knowledge will be better help than me though.
