Any tips for behaviour?

I think I may have a challenging class next week and I am not feeling ready. I did see some behaviour issues when I was last doing my itt but what can I do just to sort of avoid behaviour problems and just keep the students working hard?

Would you say good routine, being polite, not being too challenging but not being a pushover?

Never talk over them.
Employ behaviour policy to the letter.

My school has a therapeutic approach to behaviour management, which to some teachers/schools would seem bonkers, but the above still applies.

Lay out your expectations very clearly in your first few lessons. Not necessarily by making them write a list of rules, but by making it clear what is important to you (eg not speaking when you do) and then absolutely insisting on that, without exception.

Beyond that, set challenging work (to keep them focused) and stick to school rules. Never get caught in a debate with a child about behaviour. If they try to push back (“but what about…?”) simply say you’ll discuss it at break and move on.
