Late students - unattended?

A strange one. At work today I saw two siblings (year 9&5) hanging about the reception about 30 mins after they were supposed to be collected. They are foreign students. I asked if the receptionist had contacted their parents and they said nobody had been in the office. I asked for the contact number of their parents they had no idea so I unpacked my laptop logged into the school system, got the number and handed the phone to the child. I also wrote down the parents number and told them to keep it safe.

I know they were safe on campus however I was shocked and angered as a teacher and mother that they had just been left to fend for themselves. Especially as newbies to the country so new that they didn’t know their parents numbers yet- should I address this? This is a huge safety concern and I would hate to think that was one of my own children ! how do your schools deal with super late children being picked up?

Presumably (as you logged in to the system) you work at the school, so how is it that you don't know what the policy is ?

Different schools have different procedures, depending on all sorts of things.
What happened when you called their parents ?
Did you then sit with them until thy were collected ?
Do you think that something went wrong with whatever the procedure should have been ?

This is just such an odd post.

You know if you feel there was any sort of a safeguarding issue then you have to act, but 2 siblings waiting to be collected only 30mins after the end of school, so presumably all the staff were around and about themselves as well, doesn't seem like something you need to be asking about on the internet Confused

Assuming fee paying school looking at the years, and no I wouldn’t be surprised, they might have been doing extra curricular stuff, or mum or dad running late and hanging around inside, in a lot of schools they would have been asked to leave the building but unlikely for anyone to worry they were being picked up( especially as y9 present so considered old enough to look after self and supervise younger sibling)

Do you understand how old a year 9 student is?

Years 9 and 5 don't usually attend the same school. Also these year groups usually make their own way home.
