You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask

It'll be announcing surge vaccines like it was their idea.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/05/2021 16:30

Will keep that in mind.

Last time it was a bit of an impulse stop off and we ended up at whichever campsite was happy to let us pitch a tent on a random strip of grassGrin

motherrunner · 14/05/2021 16:31

So taught all day via Teams. DS spent most of afternoon asleep and has woken up full of beans. On the other hand I just want to crash 💤

MrsHamlet · 14/05/2021 16:32

People don't make it north!!!
Some nice pubs in Keswick and there's one on the road past bassenthwaite that used to be amazing. MrsAD might know the one I mean. And there's a gin place

Medra · 14/05/2021 16:36

@RafaIsTheKingOfClay Because you are wide and know what a useless lump our PM is.

Bloody autocorrect/fat fingers, that should say wise.

Apologies. Friday and fried TAG brain.

Piggywaspushed · 14/05/2021 16:47

There's a good caravan site near Bassenthwaite. With an alpaca called Fidel.

Does anyone's school (secondary) have lead practitioners?? Is it similar to 2nd in dept or a totally different role?

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 14/05/2021 17:32

crackle That depends on the school ime. It should be a different role. It should be T&L based and focused on improving teaching in your subject across the dept. Plenty of schools use it to entice people in and as a way to pay more for a teacher of a shortage subject. Others use it as an unofficial second in dept.

Cracklefraggle · 14/05/2021 17:39

Thanks Herc. Just looking at a job, leadership scale. Currently 2nd but not much scope for progression where I am. T&L right up my street. Not sure whether it's a weird move to make though.

I do know the one you mean, but I can't remember the name of it. I love the lakes, but always stick with the Northern end, as it's closer to home and less busy.
HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 14/05/2021 17:44

Not at all a wierd move. I think in education you can pretty much move as you like. You could say you want to move in a different direction to HOD. Nothing stopping you from being HOD in future, or moving straight to SLT, or even "back" to mainscale teacher.

Do as much research as possible to see if it is a true lead prac role or just a way to get someone through the door. You'll know your subject and local job market.

@DanglingMod the Alps. If we've got all this kicking off with Indian variant shiz, then France might tell us to sod off anyway, even if they had intended to let us in. Who knows.

I've had some cold holidays in Limoges in July and August. Had to go to Decathlon and buy long sleeved clothes and coats! At least in the Alps we can expect the weather to be more changeable.

DanglingMod · 14/05/2021 17:56

Yeah, definitely changeable in that area.

My worst holiday ever was 10 solid days of rain in Brittany.

Hope you get to go!

Anyone want to tell me how to deal with an autistic boy in my class who has started to make a lot of noise? I was a SENCO, I've done the AET 'leading good autism practice' thing and all that, but I'm stuck with this kid.

He makes a really gutteral sort of HUHHHGH noise every 2 minutes or so. Loud, quite short, but noticeable enough to a) get the other ASC kids copying him, and b) be incredibly distracting for everyone. He has no diagnosis, no support, just me. Presumably it's sensory, something throat-y and quite pressurised from his diaphragm.

What might replace that? That isn't noisy?

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/05/2021 18:15

If it’s just started, is there something new in the classroom that might be triggering some stress for him?

I’m definitely wider than I was before lockdown Medra 😂

I reckon we could just replace the Johnson press conferences with repeats and nobody would notice. I’m sure he’s said this before.

Frlrlrubert · 14/05/2021 18:20

Thankful for Friday.

Behaviour has been really challenging this week. Disrespect and backchat. Some of them have got to the point where they're having detentions twice a week and on HoY report and are just not bothered. Really struggling to give them my all in classes where most of them don't deserve it and won't behave, ruining it for the few that want to learn.

Really disappointing as I thought I'd cracked my year 9 classes and a couple of pupils moves seem to have them back at square one and showing off for the new kid.

JanFebAnyMonth · 14/05/2021 18:22

Oh I thought there was quite a lot of news in that one. He admitted that Step Four may be delayed.

ArnottsUnderpass · 14/05/2021 18:31

@Cracklefraggle I don't think so. Our incoming AHT who is T&L lead hasn't been a HoD. Went via advanced skills route.

I can't wait, I know him of old and he's really good. He will put the cat amongst the pigeons where it's needed!!!

singsingbluesilver · 14/05/2021 18:33

So I'm over 50 and my 2nd jab will now have to be in the next two weeks. Presumably pushing back my 25 y old daughter and all other unvaccinated younger school staff further back in the queue? I though 1 jab gave you loads of protection?

Cracklefraggle · 14/05/2021 18:36

Thanks Arnotts I'm going to go for it. Feel very unsettled where I am. Everything is great but big changes due to take place and I have teacher wanderlust. Need a new challenge.

JanFebAnyMonth · 14/05/2021 18:52

Apparently it’s the second jab which reduces transmission and that’s what they’re concentrating on.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 14/05/2021 19:12

If it’s just started, is there something new in the classroom that might be triggering some stress for him?

Since coming back on 8th March really. He was no problem at all before Christmas. I mean, definitely autistic, challenging in terms of questioning everything and so on, but not as clearly anxious. Without TA support I'm a bit fucked really.

TheHoneyBadger · 14/05/2021 19:39

Couldn’t be hayfever could it? An exaggerated response to tickle in throat?

So glad it’s the weekend. Dragged myself through today.

JanFebAnyMonth · 14/05/2021 19:49

Could you try upping other sensory stimuli?
