You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask

@LolaSmiles

noble That would be either depending on which member of SLT was dealing with it and which student it is.

I've known otherwise sensible students do something stupid (think, shouting something inappropriate for laughs or a dare) and get a week isolation, parent meetings, the book thrown at them & other students who were routinely verbally abusive be invited for a hot chocolate date with their best mate in SLT whilst the teacher is told that the student won't be sanctioned as it's a Thursday in April, the sun was at the wrong angle, the teacher's blouse was a trigger and because Jupiter was also unhappy that morning, the verbal abuse was in no way the responsibility of the pupil who yelled it.

This sums up a lot of my issues atm. One rule for some and another for others.
Mistressinthetulips · 17/05/2021 22:54

I am annoyed about the WPW kid, even though not my class, not my monkeys, so to speak.
I wonder if he had wandered in and shouted out a racist insult instead of a misogynistic one, would any SLT leave him in the building?

ChloeDecker · 17/05/2021 23:02

Well, another late night working and it’s only Monday. I am so tired but I can’t close my eyes-typical!

I do find that it is often SLT who don’t consistently follow their own behaviour policies and this can cause issues to ‘those on the ground’. Consistency is so important.

DanglingMod · 18/05/2021 06:42

We've had a few issues with misogynistic stuff being called to (female) teachers and the kid getting away with it because they've basically pre-planned an excuse if claiming they actually said something else (that vaguely rhymes), the class being too scared to back up the teacher and SLT believing the child. Apparently it's a Tiktok thing - a dare to get away with being misogynistic to or swearing at teachers.

MrsHamlet · 18/05/2021 06:46

We've recently doled out a bunch of fixed term exclusions for racist incidents, which is absolutely right. But misogyny is so ingrained that it gets lighter punishment... unless directed at one of the chosen ones.

eitak22 · 18/05/2021 06:50

I worked as a 1:1 in a primary school and was called bitch daily. Surprisingly nothing happened and all the female teachers got similar misogynistic names. Male HT didn't though.

motherrunner · 18/05/2021 06:52

As I now teach in an all girl’s school I never hear this anymore. I remember it being rife in my last school and it just being ignored. Racism - heavy punishment. Homophobia - some punishment. Misogyny- nowt.

Piggywaspushed · 18/05/2021 08:05

Does anyone else find all other staff in their school utterly disinterested in the guidelines.? They just basically follow our (pretty ineffectual) head here. None of them knew what it actually says about masks or SD in the guidelines!

Piggywaspushed · 18/05/2021 08:07

Misogynistic comments are pretty common here but not mainly towards staff. Neither racism nor sexism nor homophobia are dealt with effectively. All male pastoral leadership and SLT seems to lead to this.

ArnottsUnderpass · 18/05/2021 08:08

Depends who it's coming from, surely?

If WPW person is white, is it not cultural appropriation at the very least to be speaking patois? Is it racism?

Piggywaspushed · 18/05/2021 08:33

Yeah, will admit I thought that too. Am assuming it is a white male myself, in which case it also has undertones which need careful explaining.

MrsHerculePoirot · 18/05/2021 09:10

Is “pussy whores” appropriate then in some cultures ... 😱😱😱

ArnottsUnderpass · 18/05/2021 09:15

Not appropriate at all but the first word is very definitely patois. Wonder if the third word was pronounced more like the garden implement too.

Completely unacceptable in any way or form. Misogyny and possibly racist too.

borntobequiet · 18/05/2021 09:40

I like to ask for such expressions to be translated into standard English as I’m a bit out of touch. I’m quite insistent that I won’t be embarrassed at all.

ArnottsUnderpass · 18/05/2021 12:11

That's such a good idea, I bet they squirm!!

DollyMixtureLulus · 18/05/2021 17:05

Wasp got into the dinner school today. Pandemonium Shock

Piggywaspushed · 18/05/2021 17:12

Spent 4 hours marking today. Got another batch to do before Friday. And then see stuff on FB slagging schools off for these TAGs.

MrsHamlet · 18/05/2021 17:16

I'm about to moderate my 8th class set of papers. The marking is erratic, bordering on embarrassing. Sets 9 and 10 are my classes. One other person has done a few bits of this lot.

If anyone complains about these grades, I will not be able to keep my mouth shut.

MsAwesomeDragon · 18/05/2021 17:21

I had to deal with a horrible little boy who thinks it's appropriate to do a "wanking" action at me in the middle of my lesson. Luckily for me, his head of year is on top of this, and stamps down on this stuff. There are 3 hoys who are great with this, and 2 who aren't, which makes behaviour inconsistent between yeargroups.

MrsHamlet · 18/05/2021 17:25

Y7, 8, 10... brilliant. The other 3 might as well not be there.
Hoy11 is going down to 10. Hoy9 is swapping to 7. It's going to be carnage.

TheHoneyBadger · 18/05/2021 17:27

I would remove for that. That’s at you? Little shit.

I have done very little and had a couple of naps today. Hoping to be like a new woman tomorrow.

MsAwesomeDragon · 18/05/2021 17:33

I did remove him for that, and sent an angry email to his head of year. Within minutes she had him in her office and issuing consequences. She really is excellent, and she's got a tough job with her yeargroup, they're the most difficult year in the school.

HobnobbingAboutHobnobs · 18/05/2021 18:32

It must be the week for inappropriate comments about pussies - we had a student in isolation for something similar today. Behaviour at our school right now is at a ten year low. Every day feels like a bit of a battle.

Currently doing an online parents' evening.
Running tally of parents who have waxed lyrical about me: 5
Running tally of parents who have subtly brought up the lack of consistency caused by my (mental health related) absences: 3
Grrrr.

JanFebAnyMonth · 18/05/2021 18:35

Oh hobnobs! Does anyone know what yr illness was?

Didn’t someone (dangling, maybe?) last night say that the shouting inappropriate things at school was a current Tiktok “challenge”
(Grrr)

MrsHamlet · 18/05/2021 18:48

I went to the "well-being unit" today to drop a child off. It was a zoo. I wanted to leave with the child.
