Hi,
I was just wondering how other year 1 classrooms are run on a day to day basis. As a bit of history, we currently have a whole class phonics session. Then we do a whole class English input, followed by 2 groups of English, one after the other (or at same time if we are lucky enough to have a TA). Maths runs the same, then a whole class topic session in the afternoon. In each English/Maths session, as well as the two groups with the Teacher or potentially a TA, we have a group doing an independent task, then a group in Continuous Provision. In the afternoon we have a session from 1:30 until 2:15 and finishing off from 2:30-2:50. Then it is Collective Worship. One afternoon is RE, one is PE, one is outdoor activities in the woodland, then we only have two sessions on Thurs/Fri for everything else - pshe, science, geography, art etc.
In the past we managed to get two sessions per afternoon, but since management changes and new staff, we now have to have reading from 1:10 to 1:30. In the morning, trying to get through two teacher groups is hard too. A few years ago, we had 1 focus group per day, then the others were doing an independent task or CP. Now we do 2 focus groups per day so that every child works with us twice during the week.
How do other year 1 classrooms run in the morning? What is your timetable like? Do you manage to get a greater time for Topic sessions? I am worried that we aren't given much breadth with 2 topic sessions.
