Time off for Eid

Any advice on requesting time off for Eid if working in a school? Happy to take it as unpaid but not sure what the protocol is (is it common to ask, am I legally allowed to take it etc) and want to have the right info before approaching Head.
Tia.

You can ask but I doubt whether your Head is legally obliged to let you have it. How much time off are we talking about?

Most LAs take an approach to Eid. I think you can request 1 day off on religious grounds.

At our school staff can take 1 day paid or 2 days with the 2nd day unpaid

80% of our pupils are off -sometimes all on the same day, sometimes spread over 2 depending on which mosque their family attends

I would only like to take 1 day but may need 2 as the date of Eid isn’t guaranteed (based on moon sightings).

Staff at our school can have the day off paid. Lots of children are off too.

I live in a city but not one where there is a huge Muslim population, maybe about a 1/4 to a 1/3. I’d estimate about 8 children in my class would be off.

I would hope this was treated fairly! I have a Baha’i friend who takes her kids off for Holy days. Just ask your Head - or maybe if you feel unsure check with union about your rights first? Flowers

I’ll ask when we go back next week, as I said I don’t mind if it needs to be taken unpaid to cover cost of the supply, it’s tricky when the date isn’t 100% confirmed.
