References from current head

Hi all, for a number of reasons, I will be applying for other teaching posts. What is the protocol for informing my current head? Obviously I will need to if called for interviews, although will I still need to if they fall on my days off (I work part time)? Is it worth emailing my head to give them a heads up they may be approached for a reference? For what it’s worth things are pretty toxic at my school, lots of pressure and criticism, but I still think my head will be surprised I have decided to move on.

References are called for before interview so may be wise to let your current head know that you will be applying and to ask if they would be a referee. It would be courteous to let them know if an interview falls on a non working day but not necessary if you don’t need time off but the head will know anyway since they’ll have been given a deadline for sending the reference. Are you currently in your first post?
