I have got an nqt post for September 😊
Please could someone help me to understand the processes and protocols now? What can I expect, what could/should I do?

Thanks for your help!

You usually start in your new school a few weeks before the summer holidays and have your NQT induction then. Nothing really happens until then.

Not all schools take you on in the summer term. It’s great if they do because you get paid through the holidays, but a lot of schools can’t afford to. Either way, you should be sent a contract before you start and usually your new school will signpost you towards key policies. If they haven’t already told you which year group you’ll be in (assuming you are primary) they will probably do so after the May half term when they know if any staff are leaving.

Your NQT induction is different from your general induction to the school. All new staff will have a general induction, but as an NQT you will have a formal process.

It’s all changing from this September. Your cohort are the first who will have two years induction. You’ll have a mentor assigned to you, there will be Early Career Framework training to do online and in person. You’ll be observed to see how you’re doing and to help your mentor help you improve. The new induction rules aren’t out yet, but you will be given training to help you understand what you need to do and what you can expect from your school.

Thank you all for your replies.
I am secondary so don’t have the worry of not knowing which class - I don’t know how you primary folk do it!
Is there any contact between new dept and future nqt’s before September? The head has said I’m welcome to come in whenever - so I thought I would arrange to spend the last couple of weeks of summer term there. Do I just sit tight now and wait for contact or is it good practice to email the HoD?

We'd normally have new staff in for a day in July - but contracts don't start until
September 1st. We can't afford to pay anyone new over the summer!
Personally I'd sit tight and wait for them to contact you - we're all in headless chicken mode trying to sort out y11 and y13 at the moment.

Will do, thanks Mrs H
