Getting a job at placement school

Hi!

I'm doing a PGCE, I'm currently on my 2nd placement and after this I'll go back to my 1st placement and finish the year there. I really loved my 1st school and I would really love to be able to do my NQT there (I spoke to a few current staff who did their NQTs there)

The school isn't advertising any roles yet but it is a bit early - I'm wondering if it might be a good idea to email the head or deputy and just share my interest, let them know I'd love to apply for anything that comes up and ask them to keep me in mind.

Is this inappropriate? Or would it show my enthusiasm? Should I just keep checking their website and apply like anyone else would?

Your head of department should be your first port of call. Make it known within the department that you would love to stay if they have a vacancy.

I did exactly that. I loved my first school and was, erm, ‘less keen’ on my second. I sent a letter to the bead at the first school explaining how much I’d enjoyed my time there and why, and asked that they keep my details on record in case a job became available.

One did, they phoned me (though they did also advertise it), I got the job.

It won’t necessarily benefit you because most jobs will be advertised so you’d hear about it anyway. Some heads will create roles for good NQTs as they’re so cheap though, so definitely worth a shot.
