Anyone else enjoying some CPD over half term?

I am attending the CERN teacher webinar, which is being put on instead of their in person training. While it would be way better to actually go over to CERN properly, either for teacher training or to take a class, it is still really good.

Anyone else doing something fun over half term?

I'm enjoying some cake and not setting my alarm

But whatever works for you

TheLetterZ · 15/02/2021 17:57

I have always been a complete physics geek so learning all about subatomic particles is fun for me!

Doesn’t start till 10 so no alarm needed and teenager is baking carrot cake with coconut icing, so I still get cake. 😋

I am actually.

I didn't want to do real 'work' as I need a switch off from that, but I'm doing some reading/note taking. Going to do an hour a day on/around the following books:

Retrieval Practice by Kate Jones
Bits of Reading Reconsidered
The Writing Revolution
Closing the Vocabulary Gap

I think these are the things that will help me over the rest of the year/next year or so, with all this 'catchup' stuff. Haven't got Closing the Reading Gap, but might get that too depending on how I go.

Today I read the whole of Retrieval Practice and did a revision on Rosenshine, which is always worth doing. I've used some of the stuff already from first read, but need some more options to vary things a bit.

I'm looking for the practical stuff I can get straight in to lessons when we are back - or for online too.

OpheliasCrayon · 16/02/2021 03:39

I was going to to be honest - I have a couple of medical training things to do (sen). Its watching videos so I'm planning to do so if I feel well enough because otherwise it's just two more things to catch up on when I'm discharged from hospital and attempt to go back to work.

GrammarTeacher · 16/02/2021 06:24

Closing the Reading Gap is also fab. I'm hoping to get through Retrieval Practice and it's sequel and reading some new YA fiction. I've also got a talk to prepare for some CPD I'm involved in which is exciting and scary as there are many many people signed up!

TheJackieWeaver · 16/02/2021 09:50

I’ve just started an NPQSL so I’m doing the induction stuff for that. I’ve also been brushing up on my Rosenshine and practicing with OneNote.

(And yes, also eating lots of cake!)

PumpkinPie2016 · 16/02/2021 19:20

I'm writing up my NPQML project. Also signed up to the chat Physics conference but I can watch the videos at any time and they are only 15 mins long. I have watched some already and they are really useful.

I've also tried a new cake recipe with DS, helped him do a lava lamp experiment, been for a McDonald's drive thru and made minecraft lego with him Grin he's 7 and so far enjoying his half term -he quite likes chilling at home which is lucky!

dippyegg32 · 18/02/2021 06:19

I've just submitted my NPQML project. My first draft was wayyyy over the word count and I had to keep squashing it down ten words at a time to get it bang on. But it's done!

TheLetterZ · 18/02/2021 09:38

What has everyone written their NPQML/SL projects on?

The cern workshop is really really good. I didn’t know that neutrinos oscillate between the three flavours (or I did but forgot). I really want to go in person now.

My problem is there are 3 really interesting CPD options this half term for physics, Cern, chatphysics and IOP festival. But still want lots of cake and sofa time!

@dippyegg32 I hear you on the NPQML word count. Do remember to do a final count. I changed something, forgot to recount and went over! Reading the feedback it seems to have cost me a mark.
I did mine on Registration reading the impact was disrupted by Lockdown 1 but showed some positive results. Good luck with submission.
I'm looking for my next 'thing to do now'.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 18/02/2021 12:56

I've been offered NPQH and NPQSL, but don't want to do either. I was a deputy for 6 years, and know I don't want to be a head. I had to do my NASENCO award, and am just 'done' with having to write about work based projects. Work based projects = yes, writing about work based projects and having to read shed loads on it = no. Hats off to those of you who can be arsed!

I've read Closing the Vocab Gap now, and am on to some Oracy training. Also read the summary of Reading Reconsidered, which I've already read. The whole book has arrived now, but I'm not sure I'm up for it yet. Maybe Closing the Reading Gap.

I changed some of my planning yesterday to suit some of the things in Vocab Gap - took me HOURS. Painful.

dippyegg32 · 18/02/2021 14:31

@GrammarTeacher I got to 4499 Grin and bang on 2000 for the appendices!

GrammarTeacher · 18/02/2021 14:40

That's the thing isn't it @RuleWithAWoodenFoot I don't know about you guys but my timetable is too full to fully implement the things I want. I could do with one group less a year to work on curriculum development.

Bookishnerd · 25/02/2021 19:59

Out of interest, what providers are you using for your NPQs @dippyegg32 @TheLetterZ @PumpkinPie2016 @TheJackieWeaver?

So many differences in approach between providers, keen to hear different perspectives!

dippyegg32 · 26/02/2021 20:52

@Bookishnerd hi! I used STSN mixture of online course and face to face days.
