You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom and you will receive a detention

It's strange isn't it- back in April when we were getting daily death figures of 7/800 that number seemed huge and it seemed unthinkable that schools could open or indeed any business go back to normal. We didn't have daily case numbers as there wasn't mass testing. Now we're getting daily death figures of 1000+ but due to the fact the case numbers are dropping we don't seem to be anywhere near as bothered. To be honest case numbers in the 30,000s is still pretty high given we're in full lockdown. Remember back in summer when it was only a handful?!

On the Harries committee thing, not surprised at all at any of her comments!

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 19/01/2021 17:09

Well, I rewarded myself after a good day's work (my child was in school today so I could get loads of stuff done), 8000 steps in the rain and a chat with my mate who lives alone, with a trip to the Health board. Oh dear. Immediately furious with Us4Them even being mentioned. Haha.

Back to head in sand.

RandomGrammarPun · 19/01/2021 17:10

She really does come across as incredibly biased, as if she had one terrible experience at school and actively hates the whole profession. There is not one jot of following the evidence in anything she has to say.

Monkeytennis97 · 19/01/2021 17:21

@EnemyOfEducationNo1

Hasn't seen vast number of schools with outbreaks? Wtf? Has she not even read the data?
Exactly this. That woman has no credibility.
DollyMixtureLulus · 19/01/2021 17:21

I'm so tired. We're only two weeks in and I don't think there's any room to fit in any more online learning or KW supervision. School was so busy today, it didn't feel safe, and there's so many children who could still do with a place.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 19/01/2021 17:26

@Evvyjb Have you used MS forms? You can set a form as an assignment with a date after which it cannot be submitted.

I forget which subject you are, if maths I have other ideas.

Piggywaspushed · 19/01/2021 17:30

I will try to find out but I actually imagine her at an all girls grammar school and being quietly swotty and distant.

EnemyOfEducationNo1 · 19/01/2021 17:35

Noble- have you had a look at that staff data yet? I am very very surprised at how consistent the percentage of teachers testing positive is, and wondered if you had any insights?

Piggywaspushed · 19/01/2021 17:35

OK, so she was privately educated at Monmouth School for girls. Her children also attended the Monmouth private schools...

It's like someone soaked through and stood knee deep in a puddle saying it hasn't rained.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 19/01/2021 17:42

How have the NEU got that data? I didn't think there was any data on school staff cases?

Piggywaspushed · 19/01/2021 17:44

Where did NEU get that from, and is there one for teachers?

Chris Whitty was boarding school educated. I doubt either have seen inside a state school.

I did just discover his mum was killed by terrorists when he was 17 though Sad

That graph Shock

I'd like to see a longer time period on the X axis.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 19/01/2021 17:54

Weird - that totally coincides when all our bubbles were closing.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 19/01/2021 17:58

Secondary staff coincides with the jump in our school. Wow.

noblegiraffe · 19/01/2021 18:05

@HercwasanEnemyofEducation

That graph Shock

I'd like to see a longer time period on the X axis.

Looks like they only started collecting data on 12th October and it's a a bit pointless to add the bit before half term.

explore-education-statistics.service.gov.uk/find-statistics/attendance-in-education-and-early-years-settings-during-the-coronavirus-covid-19-outbreak

Near the top 'download associated data' it's table 1d.

They've only done it nationally.

Piggywaspushed · 19/01/2021 18:05

It is interesting that it mirrors (albeit above) trends in the wider population apart form in November??

I guess we need to be able to compare that to the working age populations and 'other professions'...

I know the police, prison workforce and legal profession are trying to track this too.

Mcvitoes · 19/01/2021 18:10

Is it still possible they'll totally scrap the idea of close contacts not isolating on the strength of LFTs?

noblegiraffe · 19/01/2021 18:12

I can't see how the NEU have created that graph from the data available Confused

SansaSnark · 19/01/2021 18:15

I want to institute a new law that anyone who wants to talk about schools being safe has to do a week of supply teaching when they reopen.

Another colleague had an issue on teams today where a student's parent interrupted her to criticize the lesson. Student is in my tutor group, and there are ongoing issues. I have been offering regular support via phone- the SENCO asked me to phone again today WRT another issue, but after how she has behaved towards my colleague I'm afraid I put it off until tomorrow as I just could not trust myself to be civil.

I think a lot of us are reaching the end of our tethers with all of this!

Piggywaspushed · 19/01/2021 18:20

Looks like data came form DfE noble

TrashedWarrior · 19/01/2021 18:23

Sorry I'm being rubbish keeping up with the thread. I hope all are ok.

Re dropping close contacts, I saw someone asked that question in primary training and it wasn't addressed. But they had a huge number of questions.

We are being trained in how to use them for us tomorrow.

I feel glad we are being given the tests, it's better than nothing.

apprehensive about how they're going to be used in arguments around re safety.

I will be making it clear to who ever will listen that they're not very reliable to rely on.

TrashedWarrior · 19/01/2021 18:23

Sounds good.
