You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom and you will receive a detention

I was a bit worried on my local news earlier though that a nearby town was telling people to go to rapid testing centres before they went to mosque etc as they would know they were 'safe'. The background is that testing has dropped like a stone and they think people will prefer rapid results but still assuming negatives are accurate is Russian Roulette.

Yes noble. Although am sure have heard/ read in news that a lot of homes have outbreaks again? Possibly that means homes for the elderly though, although there's not a great deal of difference really in this situation.

Yes, it's run by a national company havebto say am never very impressed when I have to have dealings with the regional or national structure, and I was really surprised when they said I could visit at Christmas. But they've all along said end of life visits are allowed.

Thanks noble, that point has eased my guilt a bit!

JanuaryChill · 16/01/2021 19:32

I do think it's like we're all saying about schools though, it's a question of luck, no such thing as Covid secure.

noblegiraffe · 16/01/2021 19:33

However common sense has to apply when it is due to covid and the home is full of it, at a time when we are being told to stay at home where possible. I don't think the guidelines were written with that scenario in mind.

You should only go if you can absolutely afford to catch it and be sure you wouldn't pass it to anyone else. Which you can't.

Another one with a sore back here. Also wrist feels bruised inside and it's spreading to elbow. I stuck it on the form HR sent out last week

Schools are safe, secure places.”, so it must be the journey to and from school that’s the problem.

Obviously

RandomGrammarPun · 16/01/2021 19:50

Oh my god. The wrist ache.

Mind you, I don't have a proper desk/set up in school either and have been waiting an assessment for over a year.

Anyone else hear Sam Freedman on the Week in Westminster this morning? I was nodding so hard in agreement with his assessment of Williamson, I nearly gave myself whiplash.

JanuaryChill · 16/01/2021 19:51

Your logic noble, is, as ever incisive.

Cantaloupeisland · 16/01/2021 19:51

Why the hell are kw close contacts having a daily test?! It's not like they'd be missing actual school if they have to isolate. Presumably if they were ill their parents would keep them at home so why can't they be at home now?

JanuaryChill · 16/01/2021 19:51

Random, Grin

It’s all about school attendance figures. Gav thinks they were looking a bit low.

OM goodness! Who on earth is that woman (OK she's a paediatrician) it's like she literally believes in magic walls!! Eg

Where in schools is transmission happening?

Dr Payne said, despite efforts, scientists were still unable to say for certain where in school environments coronavirus might be passed on.
^
"I think the problem is that we really don't know, we've asked this question to some of the best scientists in the country," she said.^
^
"Even the head of the Office of National Statistics agrees that we just don't have the evidence of where, during the school day, from leaving the house in the morning to getting back in the evening, transmission really takes place^.

Do you think we could give her and the ONS some pointers, chaps? (Faux innocent expression)

JanuaryChill · 16/01/2021 19:57

That's made me cross

Cantaloupeisland · 16/01/2021 20:00

But since schools are 'closed' surely those figures don't matter at the moment. The kw kids aren't getting any actual teaching so why keep them in?

Piggywaspushed · 16/01/2021 20:09

They really are all determined to say that classrooms are safe aren't they?

starrynight19 · 16/01/2021 20:10

For secondary colleagues is covid absence being marked as normal absence ?

Just got dd grade collection and mock exam results. Her attendance is included and is obviously shocking after four lots of isolation last term. I thought self isolating wouldn’t be counted on attendance figures ?

starrynight19 · 16/01/2021 20:11

So frustrating to keep reading this schools are safe stuff over and over.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 16/01/2021 20:14

We're coding it all as X but apparently there are number codes that should be used on sims? Sure someone more knowledgeable will be on the way soon.

Our LAC are not all coming into school at the moment. (perfectly safe with carers) yet they are being coded C. Apparently government says they are expected in therefore their absence needs reporting separately. Probably a good thing they're being monitored countrywide though.

RandomGrammarPun · 16/01/2021 20:15

It should be down as X, Starry, so not included in absence.

We've had some students with nearly as many periods of SI and they have 100% attendance.

Appuskidu · 16/01/2021 20:17

My DC have had 2/3 periods of SI and are in 100% attendance

Piggywaspushed · 16/01/2021 20:18

I'd want my child's absence counted as an absence, though. I'd want it acknowledged how disrupted their education has been? Otherwise it is wallpapering over cracks.

JanuaryChill · 16/01/2021 20:24

That sounds like schools are coding inconsistently??

EnemyOfEducationNo1 · 16/01/2021 20:25

There is absolutely no way I can properly assess an ergonomic work station. I am literally hot desking with 6'4" DH from minute to minute. Or working from my phone while trying to supervise my own kids.

TheHoneyBadger · 16/01/2021 20:26

That sucks January. Early mortality is the worry I'm aware of with downs (my second cousin) dementia seems like a kick in the teeth and Covid a total piss take.

If you decide not to go it would be totally reasonable to tell yourself you had no choice. You're a single mum, you can't afford to get sick, the risk is way too high etc.

This is possibly an awful idea but is he in a ground floor room? A visit through glass but with phones might be a safe but more tangible visit? Are your parents still around?

I do have heat and hot water now! Thank you for thinking of my stuff when you're dealing with so much of your own.

I made chicken stir fry and started walking dead from season one again letting ds watch it with me. Feel free to call ss Wink And we had sticky toffee pudding for dessert.

Be gentle with ourselves people.

(People over guys for me. Sometimes I go with, 'humans in training').

EnemyOfEducationNo1 · 16/01/2021 20:27

We have been X coding all coronavirus absence
