You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom and you will receive a detention

NAHT letter is ace. They are considered quite sensible, so maybe will be taken seriously. I'm very happy about it.

MrsHerculePoirot · 02/01/2021 13:00

The NEU are convinced that the NAHT will be giving advice to the members that means they will be sympathetic/supportive to those sending the letters... it does feel as it something is finally happening.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 02/01/2021 13:02

Yes it does.

I just mentioned to Dh that ours kids primary school might be shut on Monday.

“Nonsense” he says “they would have told us by now.” Hmm bless him. I don’t think it’s hit home with him just how shit this government is.

JanuaryChill · 02/01/2021 13:06

Headline 1 on R4 - unions call for school closures

Headline 2 - hospital staff call for greater measures / lockdown

(Headline 3 - vaccine boosters argument)

Headline 4 - Covid testing centres for lorry drivers staffed by military opening at service centres to try and stop delays at Dover.

I think there's a lot of people like your DH.
JanuaryChill · 02/01/2021 13:08

Can't think why they didn't just send a webinar link to the Costa / Country Casuals staff and get them to set it up.....

Monkeytennis97 · 02/01/2021 13:08

Watching bbc parliament- very interesting

OytheBumbler · 02/01/2021 13:09

I'm in the NEU and it does feel a bit underhand somehow to present a letter to my head. She's so supportive generally and would let me stay off if I felt I needed to with my cev DH.

I just hope it doesn't come down to that.

What’s going on?

My telly has too many children watching crap on it for me to change the channel!

I really hope this is true!

Seeing the NAHT letter definitely makes me feel more able to join in with a section 44 walkout if it does go ahead.

Thank you.

SaltyAF · 02/01/2021 13:26

Looks like NEU aren't saying anything about secondary schools.

crappyyear · 02/01/2021 13:27

I don't think I would strike either. It just feels the wrong move at this time. To strike you need the support of the public and with so many people in dire straights at the moment, teacher's striking would not go down well.

As a teacher and also a parent of primary and secondary I see the fears and anxieties on both sides.

noblegiraffe · 02/01/2021 13:30

Secondary schools are already online next week so no need for immediate action.

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2021 13:46

Well, except for the fact that heads form that very same union and ASCL are forcing employees in to workplaces...

TheHoneyBadger · 02/01/2021 13:50

Knowledge based teaching as opposed to what? This is as bad as peddling low stakes assessment like questioning as something new when it's a good chunk of the backbone of teaching.

Are we doing magic 8 ball teaching? Luckiy dip teaching? Ffs.

They'd love to make qts a level 3 nvq

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2021 13:50

The minute the gov treated primaries/ AP and SEN teachers, and secondary teachers as if they were doing entirely different jobs with different pay and conditions, they were on a sticky wicket.

phlebasconsidered · 02/01/2021 13:51

This isn't a strike though. It's a section 44. If it were a strike I eould do it. As a section 44 it appears i'm.the only one in uks2 in my school who would which leaves me rather exposed. I wish they would strike!

Hercwasonasnowball · 02/01/2021 13:52

I've just realised we have a LTF centre less than 1km from our school.

Would it nto make more sense to send all the students there, than create our own centre?

KatherineOfGaunt · 02/01/2021 13:55

I'm afraid I don't know the difference between a Section 44 and a strike. off to Google

In other news, DH and I have decided not to send DS to nursery for the next few weeks. DH is getting more and more worried about me returning to work, but I've said the alternative is me not getting paid. Mine is the only wage.

Just not sure what to do. I'm sat here feeling sick about it, when I should be planning for a return on Monday as usual. (I'm not NEU.)

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2021 13:55

OMG!

THIS is a Tweet form Alasdair Munro, the paediatrician poster boy of U4T

*It’s [ debates abou tclosing schools] been done in numerous other places

The concern is the new variant has increased risk of school transmission to an extent it is no longer feasible

Difficult to tease out, but I think we can all agree things aren’t going well*
