Communication in schools?!

Is shockingly awful!!! I’ve returned back to education after working for a LA for a few years and I just can’t believe how poor it is.

I work in an academy and I’m seeing first hand how strange it is

  • every man and his dog is copied into an email
  • never seem to be included in emails that cover your area Confused
  • conversations are being had between staff that never seem to go full circle and get to the recipient that needs to hear it
  • unrealistic timescales and deadlines
  • last minute requests
  • Lots of needing to know but not really needing to know
  • Lack of autonomy ( best not do something without checking with every Tom, Dick and Harry first, but try and be proactive)

Absolutely awful!! Don’t know how people can put up with it. Hats off to you all! Not sure if most schools operate like this now but holy Moses..... pass me a glass Grin

I just do my own thing really.
I’m not a checker, people appreciate someone who just quietly cracks on I think.

Agree it's nuts

@Callardandbowser see I’ve noticed that they don’t like that... they like to know what people are doing!! Hence the copy me in but

I wouldn’t last long at a micro managey school and that’s fine by me!

Thankfully, our school has an e-briefing and we have a faculty briefing each week so that does reduce the amount of emails.

One thing that gets my back up though is when people 'reply all' to a whole staff email Angry my inbox is clogged as it is and 30 odd people replying 'ok' or 'thanks for this' does not help.

Communication in our school is very good. Your title assumes all schools are like yours, but they are not.
I also used to work for an LA, but in my experience, by the time I left, the communications there were dreadful - pretty much as you describe in your academy.

It's all down to the quality of the management.
