Unison

Unison, we're v helpful to me last year.

ValancyRedfern · 04/09/2020 14:39

I recommend joining the NEU. Our premises manager was unfairly dismissed last year and as most teachers and support staff are NEU we were able to take industrial action on his behalf (as well as teaching staff who had been unfairly suspended or dismissed - all now reinstated!)

The same one most other people are in so you can act together.

Support staff can't join NEU unless part of their job description talks about teaching or an equivalent term which I can't remember now, sorry!

JuiceyBetty · 05/09/2020 11:47

unison.

Have remembered- I think, you need to either have the term teach or instruct in your job description to be eligible for NEU membership

I'm a teaching assistant and I'm with the NEU. I joined them as we have a rep in school and quite a few of us joined .

This is from the NEU website

'The NEU welcomes into membership all professionals working in the education sector: teachers, teaching assistants, examination officers, technicians, librarians, lecturers, managers, administrators and ancillary staff.'

Oh OK maybe it's changed then.....
Or maybe it was NASUWT I was talking to... actually, thinking about it, it was! Apologies NEU!

Beautifullymixed · 06/09/2020 15:37

Our school uses NUE.
They were most helpful during the lockdown, when several staff were given unlawful warnings when mistakes were made that breeched the RA.
Simple ones, such as standing too close to a parent at hometime...
These were all recently struck off, and the HT warned about their unlawful use.

NEU definitely open to all support staff. I highly recommend it, especially if most teachers are NEU too. The more people in the same union within a school, the more leverage you have.

Pinktruffle · 09/09/2020 08:17

Most definitely NEU. I was with Unison but they are not education specific and I found they were more interested in council/public service jobs. When I called them for support, I was just told there was no rep in my school and given no further assistance. I promptly cancelled my membership and joined NEU who have been great.
