Teachers opinion please

My DD is in Year 11 and so her time in school ended abruptly in March. She has had great support throughout her time at school and was upset she didn't really get to say thank you and goodbye to her teachers. So I helped her arrange for some boxes of chocolates to be delivered to school for all the teachers to share.

A couple of days later she sent an email to the two deputy heads just to check they had arrived, but she hasn't received a reply from either.

DD is now worried maybe she shouldn't have sent the chocolates. We think they arrived safely as I received an email confirmation from the online retailer.

Just wanted to check that teachers are allowed the accept gifts like this ?

I'm hoping the Deputy Heads were both very busy at the end of term and just forgot to reply, but I'm a bit disappointed neither took the time to reply to thank my DD and confirm they had received the chocolates even if they felt the gift was inappropriate.

Not inappropriate to put some chocs in the staffroom. Perfectly feasible that staff walk thru the staffroom and hoover them up without knowing who they were from unless there was a nice card with them ?

Seems a bit odd to e-mail someone you've sent a gift to, to ask if they appreciate them though.

Yes, you are probably right. I think my DD just wanted to check the chocolates had arrived safely and had been passed on to her teachers.

If for some reason they hadn't arrived we could have checked with the courier.

It's a really nice gesture to send chocolates, definitely not inappropriate. I would say to give the staff the benefit of the doubt here. They must be exhausted, it may have genuinely slipped their minds.

It's weird for them not to be acknowledged though. I sent a box of wine in at the end of term, suggesting on the box tag that one should go to the Head. She had emailed by the end of the day to say thanks.

I always write a card.

My DD included a personal message with the online order. We assumed it would be included with the chocolates. If we hadn't been in lockdown she would have delivered them in person with a handwritten card.

That was a lovely gesture from your DD. It's a shame the gift wasn't acknowledged.

Normally it would be lovely and staff would be very grateful, but there is a good chance only 1 or 2 members of staff know about them. In my school staff are restricted to zones, so no one can use the staff rooms, go into other rooms or share anything. We have to bring in our own drinks and food, and eat them in the room we are in (I have barely seen any other teachers!

Chances are the member of staff on reception received them and they haven't made it to the intended staff. They should have replied to the email, but if they are anything like me I've had over 120 emails a day since lockdown started, and it is easy for an email to be missed when 10 arrive in your inbox at once.

My school too have certain zones for different departments. Maybe the deputy heads haven't received them as they're just not in the right place. Maybe they just haven't been on rota at the end of last week and are waiting to reply once they're in school. It's a lovey thing for your daughter to do.
