You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

Because as much as they bang on about education, socialisation, iniquity and mental health what they really really want is fucking childcare

So true, before COVID-19 was there ever a thread about those aspects of schooling?

Nope. And don’t even get me started on how much they care about the vulnerable children.
Appuskidu · 09/06/2020 22:30

There’s never any consideration for the vulnerable staff though is there?

It’s all-‘vulnerable children must stay at home’ and be set exemplary work (by the workshy teachers) whilst they are simultaneously back at full capacity to teach full time.

Seriously-we have loads of vulnerable members of staff not back, this probably seems such a high percentage because we are a small school, but until those people come back-we can’t reopen fully.

If they don’t come back-we can’t cover them by daily supply, it’ll have to be long term supply. Will there be enough supply teachers for this (we won’t be the only school looking).

What about replacing our shielding TAs who are highly experienced in managing children with ASD?! Replacing them on £8 an hour isn’t going to be easy.

We also have no money!

The government will either have to send vulnerable people back to work or find and pay replacement teachers. But where from?!

I doubt there is anyone who has left teaching who would want to return in a voluntary or paid capacity, because it’s a bloody thankless shitfest!

JimmyGrimble · 09/06/2020 22:37

I’m with you, sister. We are 1FE and four of our teachers and 5 TAs are shielding. I mentioned the fact that supply is a non starter the other day and was told I was talking bollocks.

Piggywaspushed · 09/06/2020 22:38

I don't think they care about the vulnerable children either (in both senses of the word) if I'm honest.

FlamingoAndJohn · 09/06/2020 22:39

On the ‘but how will we go to work thread’ I don’t think anyone actually mentioned education.

AppleKatie · 09/06/2020 22:42

It’s a condundrum isn’t it- you care about all the vulnerable kids and so want them immediately back in school... locked up not socially distancing with their teachers who are all lazy workshy thicko’s that hate children and can be replaced at a moments notice.

Oh. Hang on.

...

BlessYourCottonSocks · 09/06/2020 22:44

Just read "employ me...I'll teach if teachers don't want to" thread and I genuinely could not be arsed to comment. So bored with them all...

MrsHerculePoirot · 09/06/2020 22:44

@Useruseruserusee re the baseline tests will your LA just instruct schools not to do it? Can you all just refuse and get the unions on the case too?

Appuskidu · 09/06/2020 22:45

Gav mentioned a few weeks ago about getting volunteers in to staff the summer school but that has gone suspiciously quiet. Do you think he’s realised that’s a complete non-starter?

I honestly don’t know anyone who has left teaching who would come back for love nor money. They left for a reason-that reason has only got worse!

Piggywaspushed · 09/06/2020 22:49

I especially love the idea of using unused office blocks for teaching. But - wait- why will they be empty if everyone has returned to work??

AppleKatie · 09/06/2020 22:50

Assuming you could get volunteers- and then could DBS check them- who would train them? And when?

And then what would they do!?

Facilitate holding pens for the children or attempt to single handedly close the disadvantage gap and solve all of societies ills in one glorious summer?

Appuskidu · 09/06/2020 22:55

I’m out of that thread-that last post of ‘if shops are all open, why aren’t schools?’ just shows the level of understanding you’re dealing with. You just can’t argue with stupid.

AppleKatie · 09/06/2020 23:00

No I’m not biting tonight either. Not worth it.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 09/06/2020 23:02

Some of the comments have made me chuckle today.

No one liked my comment if schools are back then we are all back with none of this WFH malarkey. So it just sums up that the need is child care and not really education. It is okay for teachers to travel by public transport but not office workers otherwise that will spread infection. Have they not seen the pictures from Durdle Door, the weekend protests, gatherings at local beauty spots?

I am all for supporting working parents but not if we are just a child care facility so they can pop to the supermarket or get their hair done. Harsh I know but they need the wrap around care and holiday clubs which arent going to be operating at the same capacity.

@AppleKatie imagine the risk assessment form that would need approval! It would only take one incident for the whole thing to come tumbling down.

It's unbelievable how callous they're all being about teachers' health. They literally couldn't give a toss how many teachers get sick as long as their kids are in school and out of their hair.
And the idea that teachers will come out of retirement to act as their child minders during a pandemic is ridiculous. Why would we do that?? My parents are in their 90s. My partner is in his 60s. I can imagine most recent retirees are in similar positions. There's no way I'd risk my health for that shower of rude, entitled madams.

If only they knew how much teacher time vulnerable children take up. How disruptive they often are. How they almost certainly distract their children from their own learning.

If my child wasn't back now, and I was still working from home, I'd have sorted out the social side of things on half day rotas with other kids/parents. Made our own bubbles. Unless I was worried about covid and kids, which presumably the shouty ones aren't. You could get into groups of 10, put 2 parents with them, but a gazebo between you, stick it up in the park every morning, each pair of adults organises 2 hours worth of activity.. you only do 1 a week, but get 8 hours to work or whatevs. Kids get 10 hours socialising.

Piggywaspushed · 09/06/2020 23:10

I also liked

There would be some kind of summer school but he probably wouldn’t be able to say what exactly until the autumn

greathat · 09/06/2020 23:11

I'm sick of the phrase "can do attitude". Like that solves everything. We've not got world peace? Get a bloody can do attitude and sort it out. Fucking meaningless

pfrench · 09/06/2020 23:12

unbelievable how callous they're all being about teachers' health

Yeah I pointed that out 3 or 4 times then got bored.

AppleKatie · 09/06/2020 23:15

Great article, I needed a laugh! This is my favourite bit:
he had been certain he could get at least 30 children into a classroom; but that was before he had learned that it wasn’t practical to suspend at least half the class from the ceiling in order for all the children to maintain a safe social distance from each other.

Appuskidu · 09/06/2020 23:31

The third post on a thread about zoos opening up is moaning about schools!!
