You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

Gavin W says "no plans to open schools over the summer", but other sources of support , e.g. Oak Academy, are being looked at.

Nicola Sturgeon says if Scotland opens primaries and nurseries now, the effects could lead to hospitals being overwhelmed.

It sounds like my school is developing timetables as usual, albeit a little late, for next year. Whether those timetables will actually be doable I don’t know.

I guess it would tell people what groups they have but as to which days and lessons??

I obviously want to know but am also dreading seeing my timetable for next year. Have begged for my specialist subject and hoping to at least get some of it on my timetable. When I imagine trying to teach science as a non specialist plus no practicals and no use of textbooks I wonder what the hell I’d be filling an hour with?

tadjennyp · 09/06/2020 16:28

Went to school to meet the new exec principal this morning. It's going to be interesting seeing how all this pans out on top of Covid. 🥴

FlamingoAndJohn · 09/06/2020 16:34

I just read the ‘how are parents meant to work’ thread.
The idea that this is all because teachers can’t be arsed or that we are just not trying hard enough.
Just get portacabins and use the church hall.

Don't worry, if our keyworkers are anything to go by, by the time they've all washed their hands you'll only have about 10 minutes to fill Grin

I'm being good now, I've hidden all the threads I've been unwise enough to reply on.

TheHoneyBadger · 09/06/2020 16:44

Grin Bea

Well done on thread hiding.

TheHoneyBadger · 09/06/2020 16:47

The first thing kids say when they walk in the room is, “are we doing a practical?” followed by cheers or groans depending on the answer. “Not this term” is going to go down like a lead balloon.

I also use the threat of missing a practical for behaviour management.

starrynight19 · 09/06/2020 16:52

Sounds like it’s fun and games on here today I haven’t even looked.
Had a lovely day in with my bubble of keyworker / vulnerable children today some who I have seen for the first time since March. I also spoke to a dad who has lost his father to the virus last month and he said how amazing schools are keeping going through all this for his children.
I honestly don’t think Mumsnet is reflective at all of most parents out there Smile

Hibbetyhob · 09/06/2020 16:59

I'm very worried about this 'long term plan' over a year+ Gavin Williamson kept talking about during his statement / questions. It's going to be extra tuition / longer school days or something isn't it?

Beawillalwaysbetopdog · 09/06/2020 17:01

Honey, do you teach GCSE? (I guess not, if you're not a specialist?) For some reason over half of ours swap at GCSE and start complaining if there is one (mostly, I think, because they have to move, which you know, requires effort)

Beawillalwaysbetopdog · 09/06/2020 17:02

Hibbety, my hunch is longer days. Already writing my resignation letter in my head if that's the case.

greathat · 09/06/2020 17:37

Can we ask Mumsnet to put a special schools section in the covid topic. So I can hide the whole lot instead of having to hide people constantly starting new threads about the same topic over and over. Again is it not in the rules that there aren't supposed to be multiple threads on the same thing

StrawberryJam200 · 09/06/2020 17:43

@greathat there are often threads about the same thing, what isn't allowed, is a TAAT - a thread about a thread.

but yes, life on here would be a lot simpler if all similar threads could be combined or something! Sub categories of sub categories?

NeurotrashWarrior · 09/06/2020 17:47

Parents expecting their kids to start reception in September may go ape shit though.

Saw a parent earlier who feels it's a shame her R daughter didn't get a place (school have done it differently.) because of that social making friends thing. She's not to bothered about her y2 daughter. I do get that but we're so institutionalised to think that x won't happen if it's not "the norm."

I can see it's hard for an only child but they will cope and adapt. Her two get on really well. They live in an affluent area. They're not on the breadline.

I'm very cross the seeds of worry over progress have been set left right and centre; it's not the pupils in our areas who are missing out. It's the very deprived areas.

I am starting to get the rage about perception over all this.

Thankfully I've really reached the stage where I'm not looking at the threads. I do think a C education area needs to be created. Gavin W has said they're looking at a longer, wider idea of the students tutoring thing. This is going to go on for a loooooonnnngggg time.

pfrench · 09/06/2020 17:48

I'm find with working a longer day if other expectations change.

Ie, no after school meeting, no break duties

Actually in primary, if we just had to teach the same stuff in the morning as in the afternoons, all time would become precious and we could sack of waste of time things like assemblies. And PE. Haha. Obviously not PE, that's very important (just pointless).

FrippEnos · 09/06/2020 17:49

Hibbetyhob

Its going to be interesting as they still only have 1265 hours of direct time.

I wonder how much good will this will be driven on.

pfrench · 09/06/2020 17:50

I just need a list of the things he said today, without having to actually hear his voice.

TheHoneyBadger · 09/06/2020 17:56

I haven’t got a lot of good will to spare. I was already working four days a week for 2 days pay.

TheHoneyBadger · 09/06/2020 17:57

Ime bullying and guilt trips are the fuel rather than goodwill.

FrippEnos · 09/06/2020 18:00

I think that you are correct.

Especially as results are always one of out management targets.

NeurotrashWarrior · 09/06/2020 18:02

Honey, yes, I've had to fork out for more childcare than I actually need to be in school.

NeurotrashWarrior · 09/06/2020 18:03

It's quite lovely to hide a load of threads.

Piggywaspushed · 09/06/2020 18:07

How about no meetings, no parents evenings, no form tutor time?

CarrieBlue · 09/06/2020 18:10

no form tutor time

But isn’t that when we’re protecting the mental health of all the children?

Piggywaspushed · 09/06/2020 18:10

Nice misquote of Anne Longfield on the BBC there as if she said the lack of imagination was on the part of schools.
