I only pop in and out of Mumsnet, mostly on the dating thread but saw one about teaching bashing.
Wow. Just wow.
At a time we should be pulling together some people are just vile.
I had 3 DC - all at different schools and I have to say their teachers have been amazing. Setting work, marking work, making their presence known, basically doing he best in the circumstances, as we all are. Some are working from home, some doing this on top of being at school supervising key workers’ children.
I fed up of reading the whingeing so here’s a positive shout out to you all. And some Flowers and some Gin

DD had a lovely call from pastoral care on the first day of term (after I had sent an email saying how much she was struggling). It really cheered her up for a short while at least.

Debinaround · 23/04/2020 16:24

What a lovely thread. Smile

My kids are in year 4 and reception and their teachers are brilliant. We get MarvellousMe messages at the beginning and throughout the day with work and ideas for things for them to do. They put links on with extra resources. They send jokes to make the kids smile and are always saying that they miss them and can't wait to have them back in class. They also say that they hope the whole family are well and staying safe.

They do daily challenges and we can send them pictures which they put on the school website. We got a message from the head teacher to say that we weren't to stress about the work, that it was just suggestions and they will help them catch up when they get back. That we were welcome to phone or email any time if we are struggling. They are just fantastic.

I was going to order them some packs of stickers to be delivered (got a message from the company I buy personalised stamps and stickers from saying they are struggling and were having a sale and could I support them). Would that be a good idea or is it just one more thing that they will have to faff about with?

Thank you all. I really appreciate you. Thanks

Thank you for this thread, OP and the parents who have also contributed!

It was so lovely to hear my Y11 form's voices again on Tuesday morning, we have postponed their prom and I'm looking forward to seeing them when it happens! And my other classes have been pretty much all brilliant in the transition to online learning.

I have to say the last 5 weeks have been so stressful - all of Easter was spent being trained on Teams, OneNote etc., and adapting SoW, lessons and end of year exams for online learning. A vocal minority of parents at the school made me truly miserable and I really wished to be furloughed because the stress was so much. I have written to the head teachers of my own dc school because I think that their teachers have been brilliant and actually, teaching online with 3 young learners dotted around the house hasn't been as I had dreaded, because of how great their teachers have been.

Flowers and Cake and Wine for everyone on this thread!

ChloeDecker · 23/04/2020 18:22

I really needed to read a thread like this today. Thank you so much. My eyes are welling up here! Thank you.

Chrisinthemorning · 23/04/2020 18:29

I was not impressed with the school as a whole - independent, no fee reduction, communication sketchy.
Since Monday I have been really impressed with the teachers.
Learning new technology, replying to messages and leaning comments and feedback on the platform quickly. Zoom form time every day is helping DS immensely.
Great online video segments from teachers today.
Thank you teachers for going the extra mile when the leadership are not!

Ds is still going into school he has autism and an ehcp and I initially kept him off for a month as no other children were going in and I felt bad sending him, but he's gone back this week as I wasn't coping giving him the constant care he needs & ds wasn't coping with situation either so after a chat Monday to school we agreed he should go back.

He's 1 of 5 children in the school at the moment. Even when he wasn't in the pupil support team where emailing and texting regularly to check in.

His school, especially his 1-1 are amazing anyway, they always have been and I'm so greatful for what they are doing particularly with all this going on.

They are very supportive with ds disability and I'm thankful we have a good school as I'm aware it could be different.

They have been sending me updates every day of the things he's doing. he's baking, playing, painting, eating ice lollies and they are still working on his ehcp targets and he's doing all the things he enjoys, he's loving being back and seems more settled behaviourally and sensory wise after a few days.

Nothing but praise from me, ds is v difficult and they don't care they just get on with it.

Genuine thanks to teachers.

Thanks

@Debinaround Teachers LOVE stickers. I'd be massively grateful if you were one of our parents.
Please do get them - they'll be really appreciated, if only because it shows appreciation. (and secretly every teacher I know loves stickers and stamps)

Easilyanxious · 23/04/2020 19:43

DS’s teacher is amazing! She’s pulled together a full curriculum from day one and is on Google classroom all day responding to the children.

My year 10 Ds2 has been sufficiently motivated by his teachers to be doing his school work home alone as I'm out at work and has still been doing it when I get in. There will be bumper boxes of biscuits in the staff room when they eventually get back in.

BlueGheko · 23/04/2020 20:43

I've only ever seen teacher bashing on mn, seems to a predominantly English thing, honestly never heard anyone teacher bashing north of the border. Nothing but praise from me, my son's teachers are doing an amazing job. All set up on microsoft teams, chatting and engaging with the kids, lots of positive feedback and I can see they are marking work late into the night. Doing a great job all things considering imo.

AlwaysColdHands · 23/04/2020 20:46

My DD is Year 1, and her teacher is sending through the right amount of work so we don’t feel overloaded, and there’s a really good variety of tasks - I teach in a different sector so have some understanding of how difficult this is for her, and hats off, she’s striking the right balance whilst also looking after her own child.
My DD absolutely loves reading comments from her teacher and TA and seeing what they have to say about her writing/ drawing/ collection of shapes etc.....
The Head has also been great at sending through lots of messages telling parents not to worry about the work too much, which is great to hear 👍🏻
I know there will be many teachers worrying about particular children and making extra efforts for them as well.
I’m very grateful to all the staff at our primary school

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 23/04/2020 20:49

@BlueGheko - honestly these positive statements do mean a lot to us.

We are not saints or whatever @Viviennemary thinks - we are all just trying to do out best to support the lovely young people we teach.

And yes everyone is trying their hardest in the current difficult climate which is why we have an 'anti-hate bait' thing going on as some people missed the #bekind movement.

#teachermentalhealth #solidarity

Debinaround · 23/04/2020 21:28

Thank you @BlessYourCottonSocks. I will order them first thing tomorrow.

Bflatmajorsharp · 24/04/2020 13:31

I've written to both of my children's schools to thank the teachers for pulling things together very quickly, for keeping the children very calm during that last frantic week and for all the work they usually do and more.

Can't see what's wrong with saying it here as well.

I'm so appreciative.

LaneBoy · 24/04/2020 13:41

A lovely thread! :) I’ve been pleased with the staff generally but especially the PE teacher. He was so encouraging to DD1 when she started school (joined year 8 in December after several years home ed) and we messaged him on google classroom asking for some football skills ideas for the garden (she’d been invited to try a match last term which was cancelled due to the pandemic, he knew how gutted she was!). He replied asking what space/equipment we already had (cones etc), then the next day sent a list of drills for her to set up at home :) we are both hoping he’s her teacher for year 9

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 24/04/2020 13:51

My 12yo DS has got quite stressed about all the work his teachers have sent. Poor kid - it's tough keeping on top of the emails and understanding what is expected of him in this new set up.

I've been sitting with him most of this week and the work he's been set is great. He emailed some work he'd done to his teacher today, work he'd been worried about because there was lots and he thought he had to do it all for today. Within the hour, she replied, lovely, positive, reassuring reply. I was so pleased for him. He's feeling so much better about it now. He has more confidence in himself. I think his teachers are brilliant.

RigaBalsam · 24/04/2020 14:20

Aww what a lovely thread.

Emeeno1 · 24/04/2020 14:29

My son's preschool teachers have been amazing, keeping in touch, letting the children know they are not forgotten about, setting small achievable things to do together at home. It is really kind and we are so grateful.

Emeeno1 · 24/04/2020 14:32

Also my teenage daughter's A level teachers. Not just setting and marking work but genuinely letting her know they care. Such a lovely thing to do.

UndertheCedartree · 25/04/2020 14:04

I would love to do something to say thank you to the staff at my DD's school when this is all over! They have been amazing.

We have had several video messages from the principal where he highlights the brilliant work from the DC shared on Twitter but that the work set is non - compulsory and the most important thing is for the children to be healthy and happy. He is also highlighting the school values and talking about for example being kind to your siblings. Each child has had a video message from their class teacher and the staff have been making fun singing videos for the children's amusement. The SLT also did a video talking about things they done at home - the nice things and difficult things. Really great.

I was impressed on the last day of school that each DC came home with an A4 excercise book (with all logins written in) and a pencil, their maths workbook and 2 library books so no matter the DC's circumstances they would have something to do. Since then they have been putting work up for each year group 3 times a week. One day is a topic, one is a writing prompt and maths problem and one is something creative. The PE team are putting daily challenges on Twitter too. The teachers are all leaving nice comments for the children about their work/activities too.

Finally I get a call once a week from the head of pastoral care. And I know a lot more is going on in the background with sorting out the rotas for looking after the children in school and FSM vouchers etc. Thank you to all you amazing, caring and hardworking teachers 🌸🌸🌸
