I only pop in and out of Mumsnet, mostly on the dating thread but saw one about teaching bashing.
Wow. Just wow.
At a time we should be pulling together some people are just vile.
I had 3 DC - all at different schools and I have to say their teachers have been amazing. Setting work, marking work, making their presence known, basically doing he best in the circumstances, as we all are. Some are working from home, some doing this on top of being at school supervising key workers’ children.
I fed up of reading the whingeing so here’s a positive shout out to you all. And some Flowers and some Gin

That should be ‘teacher bashing’

I agree! I have 4 DC (11, 9, 8, 8) and am an LSA so only in school rarely at the moment myself. My primary DC's teachers are doing a video every morning to explain the work and are at the end of an email or message if we need help. The eldest has struggled with some of her work and again, the teacher has got back to her very quickly with a response.

When I go into my school, the teachers - who are working week on, week off, are doing their best to support a variety of pupils of different ages and abilities to do their work whilst acknowledging that it sucks that these kids are in school while their mates are not. They are helping them with their school work as well as arranging and leading enrichment activities so they aren't bogged down with school all day. Plus of course they are continuing to support the rest of their pupils online and via phone.

This is so nice of both of you. Thank you :)

DinoDora · 23/04/2020 13:48

Thank you, that's really lovely to read.

noblegiraffe · 23/04/2020 13:49

Thank you!

My DC’s teachers are also great.

ineedaholidaynow · 23/04/2020 13:53

I am a parent of secondary school DC and a school governor for a group of Primary schools - thank you Flowers and some Wine

Humphriescushion · 23/04/2020 13:55

I worked in schools ( not teaching) you could not give me a gold cow to to what teachers do. So thanks.

BlessYourCottonSocks · 23/04/2020 13:58

Thank you, folks. It's rare (and nice) that we feel appreciated.

ThatsWhatHeroesDo · 23/04/2020 14:03

I have avoided any teacher threads so haven't seen the teacher bashing for myself but don't doubt it exists. I love my child's teacher. DD misses school dreadfully, she so enjoyed it, she made so much progress, her teacher and TA are bright, warm, approachable people and how they can manage a class of 29 crazy small kids is utterly beyond me!

cheesecurdsandgravy · 23/04/2020 14:03

Thank you 😊 🧁

MrsMime · 23/04/2020 14:07

Thank you :)

And to add to my last... I could bash my eldest's secondary because for 6 weeks I have been trying to make arrangements for her attendance when both DH and I are working - she's not quite old enough to feel happy home alone for 6 hours but is sensible enough. I have tried not to on threads and kept my gripes to DH, friends and emailing various departments in the school trying to get a response. Communication has been shocking to say the least.

But today I have had a lovely phone call with one of the Deputy heads who, whilst doing a great job of protecting her staff and the pupils who have regularly been in school, has come up with a solution to avoid putting DD1 and the staff and pupils already in school at increased risk of virus transmission and made me feel heard as a concerned parent.

I nearly cried while on the phone as in the space of 10 minutes she outlined exactly what her concerns were and came up with a solution we were both happy with.

longformyoldnormal · 23/04/2020 14:36

Another one here who thinks DS teacher is amazing. I have one in Y6, he is beyond devastated that he is missing out on school as he misses his friends and his wonderful teacher and TA. She has made such an incredible impact on the children. Y6 is full of events that their teachers make so special.

She has phoned DS a few times, after the last call he was down in the dumps because as she is so lovely and bubbly, it reminded him how much he missed her. I do hope I have expressed to her how appreciated she is.

I wish I had had such encouraging and supportive teachers when I was at school, I might have been a bit braver and confident.

Thank you so much for your lovely comments. It is wonderful that someone who is not school staff to start such a thread as opposed to the 99.99% which are the opposite.

You are welcome to join us for tea and cakes on Open morning

I think my DCs school have got it right. They have made sure that all work they have sent out can be accessed on a smartphone or tablet if that's all the parents have, nothing to print out, all can be done offline once downloaded, even a PDF of the guided reading books. Sorted access to online trading books. It may not be fancy, all dancing Zoom lessons and personalised lesson and, but it's sensitive to the fact the school is not in an affluent area and that technology access may be limited.

LowerLoxleyAmbridge · 23/04/2020 15:04

I couldn't agree more.

The care, thought and acres of time that the teachers who teach my children are putting in is just incredible. I appreciate them so, so much. The thing I hate most about the lockdown is what they are missing out on at school- I can keep them up to date on spelling etc but I can't begin to replicate the creativity and fun that is used to teach them.

Yesterday my DS's teacher rang him and when he heard her voice he burst into tears. He misses school so much.

Brew Cake for all the teachers

Dd attends an international school in China and we have been doing online learning since 10th Feb. We are stuck in the uk, but her grade is back at school in China. For dd and others in her grade, the online learning continues with teachers recording lesson and one to one meetings via teams. We are on a 7 hour time difference and teachers are staying late to contact dd and giving feedback on work, next steps, any problems etc. At the beginning of online learning, both parents and students were sent weekly surveys on what was going well and what wasn’t working and several changes were made as a result of parental and student feedback. Teachers have been flexible and supportive and very aware of the challenges faced by students.

RunningRoo · 23/04/2020 15:05

Thank you! I love teaching and miss being with my students. It’s nice to hear that the way we’re all having to teach now is appreciated.

pfrench · 23/04/2020 15:10

I know lots of people have had to alter the way they work over the last 5 weeks, but teachers have had things fundamentally changed. We've had to learn entirely new skills to facilitate an entirely new way of working, which we already know isn't as good as our old way of working.

Frankly I think most of us deserve some sort of medal.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 23/04/2020 15:15

@pfrench - no medals but cake in the staffroom

GoldenOmber · 23/04/2020 15:21

My DD’s primary teacher has done an absolutely amazing job with all of this, not just sorting out home learning resources on short notice, but really obviously looking out for the emotional wellbeing of the children and finding ways to help them feel connected and keep some sense of normality. It must be so bloody hard for teachers right now and I am so thankful for her, and for all of you who are dealing with this.

TeenPlusTwenties · 23/04/2020 15:23

Flowers and Wine and Cake from me too.

(It's so frustrating, the resources the school are providing for my y10 are great, but she is mentally so stressed she can't actually access them. )

SallyLovesCheese · 23/04/2020 15:26

Wow, this is the nicest thing I've read in a long time. Thank you to all of you who've taken the time to appreciate us! Wine or Brew for you all!

Sheeeeesh · 23/04/2020 15:30

Please don't forget the support staff who are paid a very low wage and still going in to support the children of key workers. Teachers are amazing of course! But TAs/LSAs are often unsung heroes.

NickMarlow · 23/04/2020 15:30

Dd is in Reception. Her teacher has been absolutely wonderful at settling her in, and my dd, who has always lacked confidence, is thriving and most importantly loves school. I am devastated at the thought that she probably wont get to finish her reception year.

The whole school staff have been amazing in the lead up to lockdown, keeping all the children calm and reassured. They weren't set up for online learning at all but sent us home with loads of ideas for before Easter, and have got set up with Seesaw over the holidays. If you could have seen dds face when she saw the first videos from her teacher and headteacher, you would know just how important they are to her and how much I appreciate them managing some form of contact with her.

Teachers and school staff in general, you are wonderful and do an incredibly hard job with such little appreciation. You make a massive difference to our small people - keep on keeping on for them Smile
