Let's boycott all school threads outside of Education

Honestly guys we are getting a kicking on other threads. We repeatedly have to explain our contracts, holidays, why we are not doing more online, why we should be doing less on ...... it is never ending. So far we have been off for the Easter break plus a max of two weeks. There is a lot of the population that do not need childcare. We are open for key worker children but that gets ignored. All the social distancing issues are ignored. All the ppe requirements are ignored. Now it could be that the trolls just see us as an easy target, hence all the forlough calls. So as a union member, I am requesting that teachers do not have to explain themselves on other threads as we are just fueling the fire. (I have been guilty of this).

So I am calling for a union boycott!

Thank you, @MNHQFlowers

There's another popped up about the private schools opening in Coronavirus. Didn't take long to descend into teacher slagging.

Sighhhhhhj!

SallyLovesCheese · 21/04/2020 09:51

Yes, I rose to the bait on that one. sigh

It's like MN bingo - 'teachers being paid to do nothing', 'no online teaching'...

Will try and be all zen next time and post a Daffodil

Piggywaspushed · 21/04/2020 09:52

Just seen that one. Private school parents are often the most vocal. the actual OP probably meant no harm, and was very clear and specific (in her second post anyway) about her motivation. Unfortunately a teacher stirred that one up with a flippant crossing out that started a bunfight (unintentionally). I'd just step away from that one.

I am a tad worried that a private school will go off piste and influence government policy, seeing as all Times journalists seem to have privately educated DCs and many politicians, and the private schools very much emphasise that their fees are based on a whole experience. Understandably, boarding school parents are struggling the most to feel any sense of getting what they paid for...

Piggywaspushed · 21/04/2020 09:54

Maybe we need to start a staffroom thread asking 'do you work in a school that is providing absolutely nothing to students?' I reckon no one will say they do. Perhaps TeacherTapp should do that as a question. Which would be safer as it cannot be infiltrated

noblegiraffe · 21/04/2020 10:01

I saw on twitter last night that someone has been setting up fake NHS staff twitter accounts with photos of actual NHS staff to push an ending lockdown herd immunity agenda.

Keep an eye out. Maybe there could be fake teachers/parents pushing an ‘open schools, get the kids back learning, they don’t spread it anyway’ line.

thesedaysarescary · 21/04/2020 10:11

I am not a teacher. I am struggling to get the work that has been set for my children done as I'm working full time outside the home. My eldest child (17) is looking after the younger ones (5&6) and he does do a little bit with them and I try to do more involved work on my days off. All the posters demanding schools open and claiming teachers aren't doing anything and should be furloughed or insisting that teachers have no rights to insist they aren't going back till it's safe for them to do so are being very unfair. I'm unhappy about exposing myself in work (I work for a major retailer) but I would refuse point blank to work in a classroom at this time. There would be no way to safely implement social distancing in a school. I've noticed a lot of posters are being very rude about teachers but these posters are across all boards insisting the lockdown be lifted. They hide behind economic arguments but in reality they are selfish and want to continue their lives how they want to.I just want to say that I think teachers do an amazing job and please don't take the minority opinion on those threads as they are not what the majority of parents think or feel DaffodilDaffodil

RigaBalsam · 21/04/2020 10:20

Thanks thesedays ThanksThanks

Piggywaspushed · 21/04/2020 10:28

Thank you thesedays. I agree with you about the motivations of the posters.

Piggywaspushed · 21/04/2020 10:30

I saw that too noble . Shocking and crass and obvious. I think those bots are on here, too.

A thread about quiet hospitals has a whiff about it.

LolaSmiles · 21/04/2020 10:35

That's disgusting. It's quite sad that people have such large chips on their shoulders about public sector workers that this is the lengths they'd go to.

RigaBalsam · 21/04/2020 10:49

A thread about quiet hospitals has a whiff about it.

Agree!

Piggywaspushed · 21/04/2020 10:50

Bloody hell. Another one has started. This time about returning to school and vaccination and reliably accusing people of hysteria. The hysteria word actually went away and is now resurfacing, I note.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 21/04/2020 11:24

There’s one about other deaths being recorded as COVID as well. Obviously the poster has a friend who is a nurse.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 21/04/2020 11:29

@thesedaysarescary - your words of support are most welcome!

We are all doing our best (not just teachers) in these trying times but clearly a number just want to direct hate and anger which is not a healthy approach.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 21/04/2020 11:31

@shopaholic85 - excellent - well done!

BelleSausage · 21/04/2020 11:31

🤦🏼‍♀️ The hearsay evidence is becoming quite the way to start a thread these days.

I do think it would be a great idea to get Teacher Tapp to ask the question about work setting. I’ve just looked at Oak National Academy and what we are setting for English is definitely of a higher quality and better differentiated. But that’s not going to be the case across the school or across all schools.

I do wonder if this will make thing more and not less fragmented. I dunno.

RigaBalsam · 21/04/2020 12:07

The independent thread is getting worse. I could not help bite. Have reported a few posts.

When will it end?

Piggywaspushed · 21/04/2020 12:10

I was ignoring that one to keep it out of active?

motherrunner · 21/04/2020 12:14

@RigaBalsam

I have also reported a few posts. Same old, same old.

pinkrocker · 21/04/2020 12:14

Many new ones today. I wonder if people ever think "oh I'll search the boards for my question to see if anyone else has posted this before". I'm not even flowering, I'm hiding.

RigaBalsam · 21/04/2020 12:23

I know piggy I am a moth to a flame.

Even if it makes one person think differently.
Who am I kidding?

NeurotrashWarrior · 21/04/2020 12:29

Jfc the one about boarding schools.

Regarding the level of the online work set (especially maths) I think less able pitching is better so that pupils have the option to try harder activities in older year groups rather than parents and pupils struggling with their own year group's level and thinking they're failing even more.

In seeing a number of posts by parents in closed parenting groups around increasing mental health difficulties too. I know many parents (parents of my son's friends) who feel like they're failing at home schooling, failing at coping, failing everything. Other parents posting amazing Facebook stories of their wonderful themed home school efforts have affected some badly; a friend with mh difficulties was really struggling yesterday. A small part of it was around not recognising the methods used today. The rest that her son is missing his friends so much that school work is a trigger.

Regarding levels though, I think white rose maths seems to be being linked quite a lot on the bbc? My own son enjoys maths, and maths that challenges so he's loved that today, set my school. (It was me who was apprehensive!)

I do think being able to dip into these things as a class teacher as appropriate is useful to set for pupils at home (primary age.)

Asuitablecat · 21/04/2020 12:56

I am a horrible home schooler. I shouted at Ds yr5 yesterday (a lot)cos he couldn't remember how to do fractions. In all fairness, he was saying things like 'so, to find a half, I multiply by 3?' And all.manner of shit that implied that his mouth was in.no way connected to his brain . His little sister didn't help, by nailing it. It was my first day 'back' at work. Took him 4 hours to do 10 questions. I said and did all the things I would NEVER do and say to a kid I actually teach for real cos I.couldn't concentrate on my work. And had to end up.googling 'bus stop method'. And I'm by no means a pushy parent, so I can imagine how it might feel.if you're anxious about your child not achieving.

Luckily, I'm not worried about doing the home stuff week
Well, cos that's not paying my wages. And any over achieving parents I know are keeping schtum.

Piggywaspushed · 21/04/2020 13:03

I suggested that an Op might try to do that pink and got told off!
