Anyone seen this? I saw this screenshot on twitter but haven’t been able to find the actual story.

And it assumes a parent can give up work to be at home with them. I can't afford to live if I give up work.

NeurotrashWarrior · 20/04/2020 13:19

Yes I fully agree breathless and that should be absolutely the case; as a teacher of autism in an sen school we have had cases where pupils haven't been able to attend school for long periods while waiting for suitable placements. That shouldn't be the case but sadly can be.

I am warming to them as they use widget in the y1/2 films!

charliesweb · 20/04/2020 13:28

Why haven't school been told about this? My Head knew nothing about it.
I've just watched the day 1 English lesson for Year R. I wasn't overly impressed. The phonics was phase 2, whereas mine need to consolidate phase 3. But then the writing task didn't have enough guidance.

reefedsail · 20/04/2020 13:42

Does anybody know whether the BBC and Oak stuff will accumulate or be replaced with new lessons each week?

It will be next to useless if it doesn't accumulate, as there won't be time to review stuff and target it to specific dc/ groups.

ChloeDecker · 20/04/2020 13:44

Why haven't school been told about this?My Head knew nothing about it.

I assumed they had - my Head knew about it and is a bit of a luddite and emailed us and my DC’s Primary put it in their morning resources links

Interesting you didn’t like the Reception lesson. It really engaged my DC for the first time in ages (we are Twinkled out ha ha!) . I figured that they had to start somewhere and phase 3 will be added soon.

charliesweb · 20/04/2020 14:44

@ChloeDecker I felt the YR was a bit basic for this time of year. By June they need to be writing in sentences to meet the ELG for Writing. I know that expectations need to be changed but I have been providing opportunities for my YR to have a go at writing in sentences as well as words.
I agree with engaging the children. I suspect that it as much to do with having a real person 'talking' to them. It has inspired me to record some lessons for my class pitches at them. Smile

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 20/04/2020 15:28

My yr 6 and yr 3 liked it. We watched yr 7 as well. Was really quite impressed.

They really liked the format as they knew the presenters and it was a style they could relate to. Watched it together and decided we'd do follow up questions at supper to encourage learning. We will order the matt haig book too. It will be great to hear from different books we might not have thought of.

charliesweb · 20/04/2020 15:42

@squashedflybiscuit. Did yours watch the Oak Academy it BBC lessons?

NeurotrashWarrior · 20/04/2020 15:44

Well I'm now a fan of the Art lessons as I think they're really well judged for home art on very limited resources and also are open ended and inclusive for Sen pupils.

So I eat most of my grumpy words earlier.

Haven't been able to look at much else.

NeurotrashWarrior · 20/04/2020 15:45

Does anybody know whether the BBC and Oak stuff will accumulate or be replaced with new lessons each week?

I got the impression there would be new content weekly.

NeurotrashWarrior · 20/04/2020 15:46

But don't quote me!

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 20/04/2020 15:47

Sorry charlie - just the bitesize!

Im looking at the oak academy now and thinking of getting my able yr 6 child to do the yr7 maths. Its obviously much more detail than the bitesize as it resembles a proper lesson. She's been fed up of sats revision so this would be good to do "something "

I think keeping up with all available content will be too much.

It amused me there's latin on there...

NeurotrashWarrior · 20/04/2020 15:55

reef going on the schedule it's updated each week with a new set of lessons as this week is dated week one.

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 20/04/2020 15:56

Oh wow theres a fair bit my yr 6 would like on the yr 7 curriculum. Would engage her before secondary. Im not sure my yr 3 would like the format. Ive been wondering about a maths game app for her.

BreathlessCommotion · 20/04/2020 16:30

My year 3 (ASD) and year 5 loved the BBC bitesize stuff. My year 3 asked for more work! 😱 First tie that has happened in lockdown. And she ended up playing some of the maths games and learning fractions.. So it's a hit here.

And... Me and dh do a block of work in am or pm while the other teaches. The bitesize stuff was great for that, there was some they could do alone, some with us.

GuyFawkesDay · 20/04/2020 16:41

My two loved the bitesize too.

I'm giving the oldest Yr7 science from oak as he's can do it and enjoys it.

NeurotrashWarrior · 20/04/2020 17:40

bettybattenburgh I think Attenborough is trending on twitter as he's done some of the online content for the bbc.

I hope...!

ChloeDecker · 20/04/2020 17:50

By June they need to be writing in sentences to meet the ELG for Writing.

Thanks for this charliesweb, useful to know! I’ve had a look at the Year 1 stuff and that might be better then (maybe R is a better fit for nursery)

charliesweb · 20/04/2020 18:05

@ChloeDecker These YR teachers have their own website and they have some really good activities. Which I think really match where I'd expect YR children to be at this time in the school year. You'll probably need to help your child with them though.

bettybattenburg · 20/04/2020 18:08

@neurotrashwarrior I think so, DS told me he's done some of the geography lessons on climate change (no surprise there)

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 20/04/2020 18:10

The last couple of lessons for reception this week look like they are on story writing. I’d be surprised if it didn’t involve writing sentences.

If she liked the teacher, might be worth sticking with for a week to see where it goes.

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 20/04/2020 18:14

So my bright (autistic) yr 6 child has decided to do the govt academy site daily as the idea of a schedule and daily lessons really appeals to her, and they seem to be starting topics rather than presuming knowledge. She's so happy for the first time this lockdown, and prefers it Khan as she likes the structure.

Yr 3 says its too easy. Im not sure at her age what I need her to do as a minimum to keep her ticking over? The maths for school and some interest led learning!? She's bright but bored so easily and wont sit and whizz through sums if she thinks they're easy.

ChloeDecker · 20/04/2020 18:16

Thanks Rafals and charliesweb!

reefedsail · 20/04/2020 18:18

Squashed can't you just bump your Y3 up a year group or 2? I's try the White Rose Y4 maths and the Oak Y4 English. Then interest led stuff.

charliesweb · 20/04/2020 18:33

I'll take a look at those @RafaIsTheKingOfClay

The maths also feels a little low as the expectation is that YRs are confident with numbers up to 20 by June.

A lot of what they're posting at the moment looks like it would be good for my lower ability so I made signpost it to identified families.
