Supporting high needs children in a hub

Trying not to go into too much detail but need advice.

Child is Y3, mainstream, and has EHCP and 1-1 at all times in regular circumstances. We are desperate to get him into a special school but LA don't agree.

We have been told to have all children in the gym hall and set up individual stations to reduce contact as much as possible.

The poor child obviously is totally out of routine and utterly confused. He has no relationship with the staff in the hub and his TA cannot come in (diabetes).

Yesterday and today have been, frankly, awful, to the extent I am worried for his safety.

Is anyone else in this situation?

What is the reason the child is not at home? Are his parents both working in essential roles?

You need to talk to your DSL. Pass it up and let them decide whether he can be safely accommodated.

DSL is keen to support him under the vulnerable category.

If he's safe at home he should be there. Is there a reason why he needs to be at school?

how many staff are available? is there one person who can be assigned to be one-to-one with this child?

also, can he have a quiet space / pop-up tent to chill out in and get away from noise & other people

DfE guidelines are very clear. Where a child cannot be safely accommodated at school they should be kept home, including EHCP children. The DSL could do a safe distance home visit daily, which is what we are doing with a couple of children at my school,

The DSL might be keen but if you can’t you can’t. Make clear your concerns and make them by email so if it all goes pear shaped there’s a paper trail
