Emergency measures to increase class sizes to cope with the Coronavirus crisis.

What’s the betting that they’ll say it worked so well, it needs to continue!

The stuff I’ve read online about what the emergency measures might be, seem to be either relaxing class size caps or closing schools.

Surely they are polar opposite solutions!?

And washing hands a lot , like basically constantly. That seems to be it.

Because a load of teenagers are going to wash hands at every single snack time, lunch time, between lessons, after lessons, as soon as they come in and before they leave...

Luunaa · 02/03/2020 11:19

I'm staying off and keeping mine off too once it gets that bad. Venturing out only for supermarkets (assuming by then OCADO AND THE LIKE WONT HAVE ANY DRIVERS)

Luunaa · 02/03/2020 11:20

oops sorry for caps Grin

Piggywaspushed · 02/03/2020 11:21

It felt like emphasis for the horror of NO OCADO. Very MN Grin

NeurotrashWarrior · 02/03/2020 13:08

Glad I've found this thread; the whole proposal sounds crazy. In sen settings this is going to be very challenging!

And the level of snot and non hand washing...

noblegiraffe · 02/03/2020 13:37

Well I’ve just seen Wimbledon College is closed all this week after a teacher tested positive and too many colleagues had to self isolate due to close contact for the school to remain open.

So this idea of super-size classes doesn’t seem to have been taken up.

Wolfiefan · 02/03/2020 13:40

Honestly? Thank fuck!
Obviously it’s awful someone is unwell and that others may also contract the virus. But the idea of supersizing classrooms is frankly dangerous stupid.
Sorry. As you were. Blush

LolaSmiles · 02/03/2020 13:41

You know how there’s always one head in a local area who never closes for snow even when half the kids and teachers aren’t in and they end up being supervised in the hall? And they pride themselves on remaining open but everyone thinks they’re a total wanker who should use some common sense?
That was my secondary school. All our friends had snow days and we'd get a memo that school was open / partially open but only for y10-13 and we can wear our coats.
They were a good headteacher on the whole but they did have a weird pride in never closing.

NeurotrashWarrior · 02/03/2020 14:37

No, exactly my thoughts, but with swear words too!

RuudGullitOnAShed · 02/03/2020 18:51

@noblegiraffe - your description if the Snow-Day headteacher made me roar with laughter.
It described previous HT - she would actually state 'WE will not be closing' and had total disregard for her staff who had to travel long distances (oddly enough she lived in walking distance from the school)

Piggywaspushed · 02/03/2020 19:26

We had the opposite- a head who lived 45 miles away and stayed at home whilst leaving the decisions to a more local deputy. We never closed, and he never came to school when it snowed!

noblegiraffe · 02/03/2020 22:09

Hah, lots of snow-wanker heads around it seems Grin

NeurotrashWarrior · 03/03/2020 07:26

Yes we have a snow determined head; who actually has the worst commute snow wise...

If they close schools, but no cases, more as a precaution, could it be closed to kids but staff go in? We had that scenario for a few snow days once, staff had to make the effort to go in.

I couldn't if I were looking after my own kids.

NeurotrashWarrior · 03/03/2020 07:29

Many years ago when I was at school in a rural area, the wonderful head kept a sleeping bag and pyjamas in his office incase he had to sleep there due to snow.

Oh the snow days then and in that area were wonderful! As at least it was always 6 foot drifts that you could actually play in! 2 inches seems to be enough to make it impossible to get anywhere in a city.

NeurotrashWarrior · 03/03/2020 07:30

Ps, you're doing well keeping this thread in the staff room; all other threads have been quarantined to the coronavirus area!

Kuponut · 03/03/2020 08:39

Our school rarely closes for snow (we rarely get snow) but at least half the staff in terms of TAs and teachers live around the corner from the school!

ElderAve · 03/03/2020 08:55

If its done it will effectively be a chikdminding service so that parents can continue to work.

Not what schools are for but quite important work to avoid the economy grinding to a halt in a national crisis.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 03/03/2020 10:25

But we will still be teaching... So we will still be expected to get results, no?

Piggywaspushed · 03/03/2020 11:16

Perhaps MNHQ wouldn't dare to tell us what to do!

Piggywaspushed · 03/03/2020 11:20

One for the English teachers:

'A little water clears us of this virusdeed'

Oh wait...

'Will all great Neptune's oceans never wash this virusblood from my hands?'

'Out damned spot!'

NeurotrashWarrior · 03/03/2020 11:20

For fear of detention and lines...

The whole idea of increased class sizes is ridiculous. A number of people with the virus do not show symptoms and can pass it on; larger classes will just increase the number more quickly. Apart from the safety implications with pupils with unregulated behaviour and specific needs. Eg pupils with diabetes or epilepsy who often need staff honed in on how they are..

I often feel the government never actually talk to teachers about anything that we are actually dealing with.

Piggywaspushed · 03/03/2020 11:22

What we need to do is teach them in giant exam halls, so that we can teach 100s of them but space them all 10 metres apart, or whatever ridiculous distance has been suggested...

noblegiraffe · 03/03/2020 11:24

Don’t want this moving to the other section to be invaded by worried parents telling us we’re irresponsible to even open if a staff member has a cold which would close every school permanently.

noblegiraffe · 03/03/2020 11:25

Even the maths teachers get that one piggy!
