Emergency measures to increase class sizes to cope with the Coronavirus crisis.

What’s the betting that they’ll say it worked so well, it needs to continue!

The calls for her dismissal are page 1!!!

Do I dare to admit the only thing I’ve planned today is my to do list for a potential 2 week self isolation at home 😂

Public exams are going to be a nightmare this year.

I really can’t see how putting kids in BIGGER groups can possibly help anything.

rosegoldwatcher · 01/03/2020 14:57

@fedup21 - Maybe the government will ask for recently retired teachers to come back to hold the fort!

As a recently retired teacher I would be telling the government to jog on!

noblegiraffe · 01/03/2020 15:01

Troops to teachers. Get the army in to supervise the jumbo hall class.

PanicAndRun · 01/03/2020 15:09

I really can’t see how putting kids in BIGGER groups can possibly help anything.

So schools can stay open and fulfil their second job as childcare.

It's pointless really, as kids and other staff would have to be put in isolation for at least two weeks if there are confirmed cases and teachers being off.

I wonder how the "sack the ill teacher of misconduct " brigade would feel about this Government "solution".

Kuponut · 01/03/2020 16:00

I've now made childcare arrangements if schools close or combine classes - although if we're that level of shit hits the fan I'm likely to hunker down and not go out myself.

ScorpionQueen · 01/03/2020 16:05

If one school with one case had had to shut for a few days for deep cleaning, I'm not sure this will work.
Also, who is doing the cleaning? I work in a village school with a cleaning team of three, two of whom are more vulnerable to the effects of the virus for different reasons.

noblegiraffe · 01/03/2020 16:08

Urgh, I can’t concentrate on marking my Y13 work. How can I expect them to concentrate on revision when all I can think about is how they would do uni offers if A-levels are affected?

No way will we finish the course if schools close.

Wolfiefan · 01/03/2020 16:09

Wow. There’s a teacher affected not far from us. I can’t believe the response is to call for a sacking. Shock
Surely it’s about hoping they recover well and that the other staff and students don’t contract it?
Childcare be damned. Health is far more bloody important. I would rather keep my kids home than send them into classes of 45 with teachers on their knees trying to cope and cover for absent colleagues.
The government is showing yet again it has bugger all idea of what happens in schools and what the job of teaching actually entails.

Allmyfavouritepeople · 01/03/2020 17:17

2 out of the 35 confirmed cases in Britain are primary school teachers. I'd say teachers are a high risk group who need further protection rather than further risk.

Of course protecting the economy must come first....

Piggywaspushed · 01/03/2020 17:18

Actually, whilst they may well be teachers, all that has been said is they are 'school workers'.

CaptainBrickbeard · 01/03/2020 17:25

I know someone who worked in a school which had such problems keeping staff that they simply knocked out walls between classrooms to create double-size rooms for GCSE groups of 60 kids. I’m not sure anything would surprise me now!

Allmyfavouritepeople · 01/03/2020 17:27

That's true, anyone who works in a school is a high risk group not just teachers.

Hercwasonaroll · 01/03/2020 17:32

Noble is it worth you agreeing some kind of Skype back up plan with your A level classes if they are small enough?

Huge classes is just babysitting. If it gets to that stage most students will probably stay at home.

fedup21 · 01/03/2020 17:35

If it gets to that stage most students will probably stay at home.

Only if the fines are dropped.

No quality teaching would take place it would just be a crowd control exercise.

All those saying they regularly have had to endure classes of 35+ is making my stomach turn, so unfair on teacher and pupil!

Health of the citizens comes before education of the citizens at times like these.

noblegiraffe · 01/03/2020 18:03

Skype back up plan with your A level classes

Safeguarding? The idea of this makes me feel deeply uncomfortable.

I don’t mind emailing, it’s all logged.

AppleKatie · 01/03/2020 18:24

We had exactly this conversation at work last week. I was universally agreed by every HoD that we absolutely weren’t going to be video calling from our own homes on our own devices (which it what would have to be).

There was a suggestion that perhaps we would video ourselves speaking on a topic and send that file to pupils.

I would love to see the stats on staff who actually do that- I’m going to say it won’t be many!

SabineSchmetterling · 01/03/2020 18:31

I’m in charge of Sixth Form in my school and am quietly putting in place plans with IT for us to do Skype lessons for sixth form if we have to close. We use office 365 and will use it to do Skype classes and send work to students if necessary.

Our classrooms just aren’t big enough for double sized classes regardless of any legal limits.

VenetoResident · 01/03/2020 18:33

I've spent the last couple of weeks writing revision workbook packs for my DS. I've also started uploading them to the TES.

The problem is even though they seem perfectly obvious to me, they're still requiring some 'teacher' input for DS to complete them.

I didn't write 'answers' as I only anticipated DS using them.

SabineSchmetterling · 01/03/2020 18:33

We’re planning to use the audio calling and screen sharing option rather than videoconferencing though.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 01/03/2020 20:03

I am regularly asked to ‘double up’ my lessons to cover staff absence. Can be 50+ kids together in ‘lesson’ it’s crowd control not learning. This was pre coronavirus! Teach PE so apparently that’s ok?!

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 01/03/2020 20:04

Also have 4 timetabled lessons a week with 34/35/36 pupils in a class. Madness.

thunderthighsohwoe · 01/03/2020 20:08

I don’t get how this would work. We are a village primary in an old Victorian building, and can only just fit desks for 30 in our classrooms. Our playground is tiny too. Maybe could have an extra two classes in the hall?
