Careers similar to Ed Psych? Career change

Hello all
I'm after some advice. I've been working as a teacher for 5 years now and my heart is just not in in it any more. Ideally I would retrain as an Ed Psych but cannot afford time off to retrain & am well aware of how competitive it is. Has anyone career changed into anything similar but that doesnt require the retraining? I'm particularly interested in child development and how children learn and have worked in both mainstream and SEN settings.

I'm Head of Pastoral in a SEN setting and I enjoy it so much. It's the best part of school life for me; no teaching! Is something like this an option for you?

That sounds really interesting Luuna!! I would love to do something like that. Was it just something you saw & applied for ? Sorry to be nosey but is the salary comparable with teaching?

It is now I'm head of the department, but it was a lot less when I started a as a pastoral assistant. I had no experience with that or safeguarding when I applied so was lucky to get the role. It took me 18 months to build up my training to get to here, moving up the H pay scales.

The good parts of the job is not taking work home (only mentally) and really enjoying the holidays- something I couldn't do in teaching.

If you can read and write, and understand the terms "specific" and "quantified" you'd be streets ahead of the SEND team at almost any local authority.
(If you can write fiction, and cut and paste from other children's EHCPs you'd fit right in).
Seriously though, as a parent with no education experience apart from having two DCs, one with SEN, I could do a better job than the SEND team and I bet you could do an infinitely better job.

What sort of salary would be acceptable/ what are you on now? That seems to be important to you?

You know you get paid while you train as an EP?

fedup21 · 08/03/2020 15:36

I don’t think there’s anything that is similar to an EP that doesn’t involve training.
