How common is doing further maths in Y10?

We got a letter today telling us DS1 is doing further maths GCSE this year, which I wasn’t expecting. I knew he was doing further maths but had assumed that would be taken in Y11. He wasn’t aware it was this year either! Is this common?

No, it’s ridiculous. It requires a level of algebraic understanding that they will need Y11 to develop.

There’s a risk of them failing, tbh.

Thank you. I suspected it might be. It’s parents evening tomorrow so the perfect opportunity to ask what is going on.

Are you sure it's not a garble?

Some schools have their best mathematicians sit Maths in Y10 and FM in Y11, so it might be appallingly worded notification that he's doing a maths GCSE this year because he'll also be doing FM.

Of course, other schools do both maths and FM in Y11 and if that's what yours does ignore me.
