Teaching in Scotland

What is it like just now?
I've been teaching Art in London secondaries for years but will be moving home to Glasgow this year.

Anybody done this recently? Any advice is welcome.
How easy is it to make the transition? Any issues?

Was thinking of doing supply initially to get an overview of schools. Is there a demand for supply?

I’ve only ever taught in Scotland so can’t comment on the transition aspect.

Glasgow city council usually has a very good demand for supply but mostly general unless you’re in their permanent pool. The good thing about the permanent pool is they usually find you a permanent post after 2 years. Not sure about the demand for Art teachers as I’m Science.

However Glasgow city is quite a big area so I suppose it depends what you mean when you say Glasgow.

The councils are all very different with different rules (I’m not currently in any of the ones you’ve mentioned but used to be in Glasgow city) might be worth getting on the supply list for them all and getting a feel for which council suits you best before applying?

I'm primary so can't answer all your questions but made the move two years ago and I've never looked back. Education here isn't perfect but oh my god, it's a million times better than down south.

First thing to do is get registered with GTCS. Start the ball rolling on that ASAP and keep at it. What's your degree? Secondary teachers up here must have a degree in the subject they are teaching. I'm not sure how supply works.

I'm registered and have my PVG sorted.

When you get interviews in Scotland, what's the format? Down here you have to teach a lesson and have interview with a student panel then SLT. It's a whole day thing.
Is it similar?

Interview by SMT only. People here are baffled at the idea of teaching kids you don’t know for an interview!

Probably will be different for Secondary but I applied for a general Primary post and was able to choose from a selection of schools for interview, which was a 3 person panel.

I was given a full time permanent contract and a list of schools to choose from.

There are some schools here that do have classroom teaching in the interview and pupil panels.

So if I apply direct to the council Im likely to just need to prepare for an interview only?

I'm reading up on CfE and exam board stuff. Any particular focuses, buzzwords they'll be looking for?

Mistress when you say some schools? Do you mean local authority or private?

I don't have any experience in private, just state. I'd look up Empowering Schools - should be stuff on Education Scotland website.

When you move up, could you go in and do some shadowing in schools as this would be helpful in terms of what's happening on the ground. Though obviously nicer to have a job before then Biggest lot of job ads seems to be May/June for the coming year.
