DH has booked a holiday for next year and got the days mixed up.😳 The day we are due to return us an inset day in the school I work in so I would either have to ask for a days unpaid leave or we return a day early (it's in this country but a very long drive away).

I'm a Cover Supervisor and have never asked for anything like this so unsure if I'm being ridiculous for even asking?

Check what your pay policy says. I’d be asking for a days leave of absence and offer to make up the missed time, depending v in what training you’ve missed. In my school some training days are taken as a couple of twilights.

Depends on school, all staff have to put it in writing to the head as a formal request and he will sanction or reject it. With it being an inset I can't see it being an issue!

While working as support staff in secondary I was granted unpaid leave when I had elderly relatives visiting from abroad.
In that place of work, whether you were granted such requests or not very much depended on if you were “in favour” with SLT.

It’s definitely worth asking.

If they hadn’t granted me unpaid leave I would have resigned.

I have taken unpaid leave before, but not for inset days. My school is pretty good about it depending on the reason, but it is policy that no unpaid leave will be given on inset days. Check your contact though, before not all support staff are contacted to work insets, just term time.

I am contracted to work inset days. I might not even be the by the time this holiday comes about but I need to plan as if I am I suppose. X

We have request forms to fill in. With our Head, honesty would be the way forward and would likely be granted as a one off.
Also, may still be paid. Depends on your leave requests and the Head you have.
A previous Head of ours would have been a different kettle of fish.

Is it the INSET where the child protection training is given? That might be trickier to get off than a bog standard INSET.

I put in a written request for unpaid leave and filled in a form. It was granted but I don't think it's an entitlement, more of a gesture of good will.
