Exam marking pay

Ex teacher here wondering about exam marking for Biology GCSE. Any ball park figures for how much one gets paid for this please?

I haven't done it for a few years but I did it a few times and always made over £1,000. It may have gone up a bit now but it was £3 something per paper maybe? This was English Lit.

It was also hell on Earth for 7 hours a day, 21 days running! Biology might be better though if it's mainly shorter questions?

I usually mark 300 papers and get around £1000 after tax

Pay is ok, but massive benefit in cpd so obviously no benefit to you as an ex teacher.
Regular markers should get about £1k, seniors more. It is a lot of work.

I agree, about £1000. It’s hell. I hate it. But it’s amazing CPD.

How ex is ex though? The rules have changed and you can’t mark if you haven’t taught the course within (I think) the last 2 years or you haven’t marked exam papers in that time.

Also, statement of the obvious, but GCSE Biology was today so this will be something you’re thinking about for next year I assume!

Yes, I know Biology was today. Stopped teaching just under 2 years ago. AQA require you to have taught in the last 3. I had just done a year of the new syllabus. It's for the money really. Thanks

It’s very difficult to get onto marking for aqa science at the minute I don’t think they are accepting applications. 1000 pounds is about right but you can earn more when the cap is off and all the spare marking gets released.
Try edexcel. They have opportunities all year if you aren’t fussed what you mark ie international qualifications etc

Can an examination marker position get regular work from a school. I wish to do this job, but am obviously wondering if it is just during examination periods of pupils work is available. Or are there other things involved in this position I could do.

Usually it’s the boards that pay you to mark rather than individual schools although there may be exceptions
