Payscale and years teaching?

I'm still on MPS6 and have been teaching for almost 15 years! 12 of those in a tiny school and I also worked very part-time following 2 x maternity leaves to have my two sons.

If it's not too nosey a question, how long have you been teaching and what pay scale are you on?

I'm looking for a new job and I think my rubbish pay scale is messing up my chances 😢

Why haven’t you applied for UPS? I’ve been teaching nearly 14yrs and on UPS3 & have been for the last 3/4 yrs.

Because it was a minute school of two classes and as I was p/t they said no money in budget to put me on UPS. Promotion wasn't possible as school staff were class teachers and Head/SENCO.

I agree, they were just so tight with their budget they wouldn't entertain the idea. Problem is it's not looking good on applications...

I'm in an independent which has its own pay scales but I'm in my 7th year of teaching and an equivalent salary of UPS.

Don't disclose how much you earn if it's an issue. I had the opposite problem, I was deemed "too expensive" by employers after dropping down to teaching from leadership. I stopped putting how much I earn on application forms.

I dont knownit will be a problem. Lots and lots of part time teachers have had a similar problem..

More relevantly i know of local schools that actively chopped back the more expensive staff and actively recruits cheaper staff. Now Mats and academies run their own budgets id have thought it would go ij your favour...

I've been teaching 10 years and am still on M6 technically. This is because I left my state teaching job to move abroad for a year and didn't work. Then when I came back I worked in private education where you negotiate your salary beyond M6. This is one of the reasons I will probably never return to state: I'll not be able to get paid what I'm worth.

I’ve been teaching for 12 years and I’m also still on M6. With having a three breaks for maternity leave and being part time it never felt the right time to apply for UPS. I’m also worried it will make it even harder to find new jobs when budgets are so tight, I feel like M6 is already off putting as a lot of adverts are for M1-6 only so this puts me at the top end.

I've been teaching for the same length of time as you. I used to be in UPS2 but took a pay cut back tonM6 when I wanted a part-time job. Theoretically, everyone is entitled to apply to go through the threshold when on M6 but I know my school don't have the budget and in reality it's even harder to ask when you're a part-timer. I wonder if I'll ever get back to UPS.

11 years, UPS3 and I went through thresholds whilst on maternity leave. I’ve been part time for 8 years and had two maternity leaves so only worked two years full time in my whole career.

With school budgets as they are, the lower the pay scale the better I would have thought.

Surely this works both ways though. Maybe people would be surprised at your pay scale, but it will mean opportunities are open to you which you'd be too expensive for otherwise? What have you been applying for?

Teaching application forms nearly always specifically ask for your current Teacher Pay Scale though?

They do ask your pay scale - the one I did a couple of weeks ago certainly did anyway. They should pay you what you’re worth surely!

They do ask, but you're not legally obliged to fill it in. I haven't been questioned about it since choosing not to put it on forms.

I would have thought you were in a better situation on the MPS as you’re cheaper! Pay portability was scrapped in 2014 anyway, so heads can/will try to pay you what they want.

Threshold application the head gave me - he was really keen for us to do it!

I’m moving from one academy to another but they’ve kept the same pay scales. He’s paying me ups3 so I’m happy.

I don’t understand why you wouldn’t go for it - surely a school can’t say “sorry we can’t afford that” when you’re just following the scale and performance management? What’s the incentive otherwise?

I did wonder when I applied for the job I’m starting in September whether I would be too expensive but seems they took on two of us at the top end 🤷🏻‍♀️
