Is this normal?

Ds4 likes to write me messages. He's just brought this one to me.
Can you read it?
Sometimes he writes backwards, sometimes the right way. Is this a normal stage? He's left handed if that makes a difference?

He's not at school yet so I'm concerned on whether I should leave him to it or try to correct him.

If he’s not yet at school and already writing more than his name and the odd word maximum then it sounds like he’s doing fine!

Thank you Tilda, I'm just concerned about bad habits. I've barely shown him anything so he's doing this by himself

Perfectly normal! Even when they’re at school they’ll often do backwards/mirror writing.

I would hate to put him off by telling him it's wrong.

Can i just leave him to it? Maybe I should tell him what im doing when I write back to him?

This is what it says btw. Starting from the bottom right, upwards.

I can read it, the correct sounds are in an order (not the correct order, but a logical one) and the letters are legible.

I am a nursery/primary school teacher though and use to reading such work.

I wouldn't necessary correct him on that particular piece, I'd be making sure he knew I could read it and liked him having a go with his writing. I'd make sure I modelled something in the near future though where I made it clear I was starting in the top left, or point it out next time I read something to him.

I wouldn’t correct. He will learn all of the sounds and how to form letters correctly at school so keep doing what you’re doing which seems to be fostering a love of writing!

Even in year 2 you will have the occasional time when someone will hit the edge of the page (most usually when annotating a picture or something) so carry on writing but in reverse as if their writing literally just bounced off the edge of the paper

His first words this morning were "Can you write me a message". He wrote 'mummee is beootiful' the correct way around too! Just a few wandering letters. He was so pleased that I could read it and that it made me very happy.
I think I will leave him to it.

Magnetic letters on a board could help him look to see which way they go. Or he could make messages from the letters. Be sure they are lower case not capitals.
It's very common in children starting to write and can persist in some for a while.
