How long are you allowed to spend teaching the same year?

Our HT prefers a move every 2/3 years but the Reception teacher has now been in the post for a significantly longer time.

There is no limit totally up to the head. Foundation stage teachers tend to specialise so less likely to move year groups. Totally different curriculum...

I've been in my class for 7 years. Small school.

PP right - EYFS a totally different curriculum so sometimes better to develop the expertise / maintain consistency.

I understand the argument about the EYFS being slightly different; however I do also think there comes a point where someone else needs to be allowed to step in with fresh eyes!

Class allocations are nightmarish tbh.

Our EYFS teachers always remain the same but everyone else moves every 2/3 years.

Teachers discuss it with the principal about mid year. Then classes are allocated. Sometimes you'll get asked if you mind changing if there is a particular reason, like a team being too grad heavy.

Our HT asks us whether anyone is willing to move stage, if not, then we stay where we are. I have known a HT who moved staff every w2 years and if she knew you hated upper or infants etc she would deliberately put you there nasty cow

I have also worked with someone who taught p7 for 34 years and another who spent her entire teaching career in the same school, same classroom with P1.

We get choices, but not everyone will get their first choice and the people who have been in post longest will not be a priority to get their first choice. Also, it sometimes comes down to needing someone for an unpopular year (hello, Year 6!), and someone has to do it!

EYFS might shuffle between Nursery and Reception, but no one's moved into or out of the EYFS zone as long as I've been there. It's completely different to primary.

There's no hard-and-fast rule. How could there be?
We always used to make a point of moving every 2-3 years, but that's slid recently. There have been so many changes to the curriculum in recent times, that it's been quite useful to stay put for a while and get used to it all.

I think everyone should have to work in year 6 at some time and then maybe they'd make sure that the children made the expected progress every year, rather than the year 6 staff having to do all the hard work!

I've moved to y6 after 10 years in one year group and 10 years in another. Both times I was asked if I wanted to move and I was more than ready. In fact a bit bored.
I'm fully aware not many people like year 6 and the extra stress that goes into it and I'm probably there for at least another 10 years now.

I know one year 6 teacher who had taught the same year group in the same school for over 30 years. She taught my dds and was excellent.
