Pension Question

Hello all, I'm hoping you may be able to help me whilst I wait for HR to bother getting back to me!

I left teaching in 2009 and went on to run my own Copywriting business. However, I have recently started wishing for a local authority though not as a teacher. In my first pay slip I have paid out a contribution to the teacher's pension scheme, but I'm no longer writing as a teacher. Hmm

Is this a mistake, or is it usual that because I what have a teacher's pension scheme in place my new local authority employer will pay into this greater than the separate council person scheme? Seems odd.
