Has anyone done a SCIIT or teaching apprentice with kids?

Am I mad to even consider this? I have young DC. From what I gather training to being a teacher isn't family - friendly? I hope to do part time once qualified, but is there much part time work realistically? I'm so unsure what to do. I have lots of school experience and enjoy it. However the more I research teaching the scarier it seems. I would be willing to do an intense yesr if it meant after I could have a part time job which worked well with young DC, but unsure this is realistic even? Anyone help?

How young? What sort of family support do you have? I did GTP (similar to SCITT) when my dc were 8, 10, 12 and it was OK. Much younger and it might be a challenge tho as there is so much to do in the evening when a 3yo (eg) would need your attention.

I was then a teacher for 6 yrs but I do something else now.

As a teacher with 2 young boys, I have to say it is hard work and not family friendly. I work part time and still find it hard as it's never part time. I came in on days off for parent evenings, was up until early hours of morning for reports and marked and planned at weekends. Currently on maternity leave with my second son and.will take a career break until youngest in nursery. I never shut off from school. However, I love teaching and know when the boys are in school, we will share holidays and I will be able to help them with their learning. I couldn't imagine doing another job hence career break rather than change. It's a fantastic job but all consuming and not necessarily better part time. Also part time roles are like gold dust.

Good luck! Maybe shadow a teacher for a few weeks and do their hours to see if you could manage home and work? Remember you will have essays on top!

Just one more thing. I used to be a teaching assistant before I became a teacher and I found a teaching assistant role easier to fit in with my family life.

My dc will both be in school as from next september. TA work is OK, but doesn't really pay the bills.

On the plus side Dh would be able to go part time whilst I studied.

My 2 were 1 and 3 when I started my SCITT.

1. I had a very, very supportive DH.

2. I had an an amazing nanny, who had been with us since DC 1 was born.

3. I had 2 healthy parents living 40 mins away who were happy to cover if nanny was ill.

4. The SCITT placement schools + the university sessions + library were all within 30 mins drive of my house.

5. I was coming from a 6.5 day week, so I was used to stupid hours.

6. It was still hard, but NQT year was just as hard.

My advice would be to set up at least 3 layers of childcare - you will have very little brain space to sort things out.
Also, do not plan any house building or renovations during PGCE and NQT years.
Ditto weddings.

The benefits of spending holidays with your children are huge. I also think that learning to teach made me a better mum, while being a mum made me a better teacher.

I don’t think I have seen a part time teaching job advertised for years! Those roles almost always go to existing full time staff requesting reduced hours.

I would say read some of the (similar to yours) posts on the staff room board so you know what it’s really like.
