OK.

I can seat eight at the front of my class (two desks seating two, one row seating four.)

I have five VERY naughty boys. I have to have them under my nose.

I have a very troubled girl who needs to be at the front due to visual impairment (she also could do with being at the front, lots of problems, very weak and prone to lashing out: she shoved me last week!)

She Will. Not. Sit. with the boys.

Throw your suggestions at me ...

Put four of your boys at four corner of the room. The girl at the front separated by a desk from the fifth boy.

If the girl objects to boys because they are boys she needs to suck it up. Think:I don't want to sit next to girls/black children. Doesn't work.

GemmeFatale · 06/02/2019 10:02

She has a choice. She can sit in the allocated seat or she can sit outside the heads office until her parent collects her.

You wouldn’t put up with the naughty boys refusing to sit where you tell them, why are you pandering to this child?

GemmeFatale · 06/02/2019 10:02

Head’s

noblegiraffe · 06/02/2019 15:17

I wouldn’t group naughty boys at the front where they can piss around together, I’d put them to the 4 corners of the room.

AppleKatie · 06/02/2019 15:24

I agree boys in the four corners of the room and one in the middle of the front row.

Girl at end of front middle row with a friend next to her if she has one.

Artfullydead · 06/02/2019 17:21

I can't put the boys in the four corners: they are the main naughties but far, far from the only. Corner one and corner two are already occuiped with two of the four naughties anyway and i have another naughty girl in one back corner and another naughty boy in the other back corner.

Sit outside the Head's office

I've no backup with this.

why are they all so naughty?

maybe seating isn't going to be the solution to this. or completely changing the whole set up.

Artfullydead · 06/02/2019 17:33

Just a naughty year group tbh

toomuchsplother · 06/02/2019 18:09

Primary or secondary? If it's secondary how do other staff handle them in their classes re seating?
If Primary, how did the previous teacher deal with it?
Also why are they being naughty?

Tanaqui · 06/02/2019 20:43

Can you sit the whole class boy/girl so no one has any option? Or split the row two and two and seat one on the short side and one on the long so they aren’t side by side? Or replan the whole seating and do rows/ a big U or something different just to shake them up a bit? How many children altogether?

MissMarplesKnitting · 06/02/2019 20:50

I rearranged my classroom to look like E and reversed E shapes, gap down the centre of the room and between at E for me to patrol.

Kids sit at right angles to each other and it's mixed my naughties in one class up and worked well as you can have the girl there and one of the boys behind.

I hear you. I have one class where I look at them and don't know where to start. Trial and error.

AppleKatie · 06/02/2019 20:56

You can put them in the four corners. You need to rearrange EVERYONEs seating though.

You need to change the dynamic in the room. So next lesson they line up outside, they enter in silence, they sit where you tell them in new seats.

Obviously they won’t do as you tell them the first time so you send them all out to line up again. And again. For as long as it takes.

Even if that’s 3 lessons.

Artfullydead · 06/02/2019 21:14

Yeah I know that thanks Hmm I wanted advice on seating, not basic classroom management. And it's poor advice: lining them up is a surefire way of getting them hyped up before the lesson has started.

OP posts:
AppleKatie · 06/02/2019 21:15

Riiight Hmm. What’s your plan then i’m dying to hear where I and everyone else are going wrong...

Artfullydead · 06/02/2019 21:18

Well, it isn't lining them up, putting them in all four corners which I can't do as two of those corners are already occupied by those same students and where would I put the other "naughties"?

OP posts:
AppleKatie · 06/02/2019 21:22

What do you think we’re going to say? There are presumably only so many chairs in your classroom so if separation doesn’t work you’re going to need to look at other strategies that don’t involve chairs.

Artfullydead · 06/02/2019 21:25

I don't know. That is why I asked Grin

If I knew what you were going to say, it would negate the point of posting in the first place, would it not?

You’re being a bit arsey to people trying to help you! Your OP said you had 5 naughty kids you had put under your nose, not a classful of them.

For my worst class the seating plan is an ongoing work of careful balancing. My worst kids are in the corners with no one sat with them. The rest of the disruptive ones are dotted around, buffered by more reasonable kids, next to and behind. Most of my front row is actually reasonable kids who get dragged down by disruptive kids.

Iamtheworst · 06/02/2019 21:37

I’m going to regret this but please tell me you’re more careful with you kid with a visual impairment. Mine was permanently in trouble for shoving until I got a dr to explain what periferal vision was. Also short temper is really common when you need more process time.
Im sure you’re perfect and the kids difficulties are completely separate. But I’ve been burned by every teacher bar one on this.

Artfullydead · 06/02/2019 21:37

Yes, but it is those five I was talking about because they are on the front row!

It may well be there ISN'T a solution but one can only ask! Nowt wrong with pointing out something can't work?

OP posts:
noblegiraffe · 06/02/2019 21:40

It’s the humphy face and telling someone that their perfectly reasonable advice is poor (not just that it won’t work for your class) that’s a bit rude.

You need to put your vulnerable girl with visual problems on the front row, so at least some of the boys need distributing elsewhere.

Artfullydead · 06/02/2019 21:46

Yes, but she is adamant she won't sit near ANY of the boys. Vulnerable girl might be vulnerable but she is no angel: she is the one who shoved me.

OP posts:
Coolaschmoola · 06/02/2019 21:48

If you can get eight on the front, and you've got five naughty boys and one girl, I'd be inclined to put the girl on a two, on the wall edge, put another girl next to her. Split the five boys onto the other two, and the threev seats of the four row that are furthest from the girl, and move another girl into seat four.

Left to right it would go:

B/B B/B/B/G G/G

Artfullydead · 06/02/2019 21:49

Could do, she'd have to sit on her own though. She's like a Syrian hamster Grin

OP posts:
Iamtheworst · 06/02/2019 23:15

What does “she’s like Syrian hamster” mean?
