Moving from Reception to Year 3

The head asked me how I would feel about possibly moving to Y3 next year and my head is spinning! I'm ready for a new challenge but a bit scared that I won't be able to keep up with them- has anyone else made the move that can reassure me?

Go for it! Much less exhausting than dealing with 30 little people all day! Very different challenge, much more in depth subject matter, but most enjoyable. Your Headteacher must have faith in your abilities.
Good luck!

Me! Moved from Y1 to Y3 after returning from mat leave and am in Y4 this year. I'm loving it! The children are less fussy, more independent and it's good to focus on developing their social skills in a more nuanced way.

The curriculum was a big change of course but if you've got solid subject knowledge and or good training/support in school you'll manage it. I'm enjoying the variety of subjects and how the children respond to new ideas.

Not so much contact with parents (which could be good/bad!) and more opportunities for the class to be involved in extra activities (sports, clubs, competitions etc).

This sounds dramatic but I wouldnt have continued in teaching much longer if I hadn't found a good balance in this new year group.

Thank you so much for your replies- I needed to get out of my own head thinking about it and not allowed to talk to mention it to colleagues yet
:-(
I definitely like the sound of more independent children and less contact with parents, I'm going to let them know I'm up for the challenge!

More marking!

I taught Foundation and Year 1 for over 20 years before being moved to year 3 this year. I was very panicky but love it and wouldn't want to move back.

There's a hell of a lot more marking but everything else is soo much easier. I spent the first 2 terms being continually amazed by their independence.

YY, this. I made a similar move. I still had my 'well, if no-one wets themselves, we don't have many tears and a couple can write their names we're onto a winner' hat on on the first day and was astonished by these creatures who could write sentences Shock Grin

I think Y3 might be my favourite stage, actually.

Thank you for your replies- I think I'm going to be the same-children able to write sentences! Amazing!
