Private tutoring

Picking the brains of the more experienced here...

I normally do tutoring through an agency with children not in school (so I'm their only subject teacher) and I've just been asked about doing some private work. Now then, is it the norm to work in the child's home or have them come to you and what is the etiquette regarding their school work - do you do stuff that works alongside/supports the classroom topics or do you do something totally separate?

They come to me and I work by word of mouth with local parents who know me and make sure that I’m not alone with them, just in case. I offer to work in concert with class teachers, but with my current crop, no consultation has been forthcoming and as I’m working with kids with some additional needs, I’m plugging gaps and offering prelearning of gcse content. Tiring but really rewarding.

How do you 'make sure'? If I do this then it'll probably be when my DC are at after school club, so, unless DP is working from home, I will be alone!

I have always gone to the child's home because parents preferred it that way. With regards to work I would be consolidating what they learned in school and working on things they haven't understood well, doing homework with them too if they can't do it alone. Depends how able they are.

Yes I'd say in my case they prefer it because they could see who was around their child and also if the child was playing up. I do know a few people who had children come to them so whatever works for you I guess.

I tutor with older kids and have kids of my own who don’t need me (ignore me, largely 😉) as they’re older. I’m lucky to live close by to plenty of parents who have known me for years so it’s very convenient for all concerned.

I do private tutoring and would always invite the parents to come to my house to see what environment their child was in. I advertise in local shops, and point out I am state-registered so have been cleared as per police.

God, the idea of inviting complete strangers into my home to vet me!

I mean, I have no problem with inviting complete strangers into my home, but I really wouldn't want them to then tell me what they think of me...

Hi Mrs! We have tutor for DD age 10 once a week after school. She comes to us (I assume builds cost into rate) and she has free reign of the kitchen diner while I bugger off upstairs to go on MN, helps herself to hot drinks and biscuits and uses our WIFI. Seems to work pretty well!
