Catholic school, we are lucky enough to have a few musical staff who can play the piano and sing. We have a choir but I need new hymns for the whole school to sing, ideally somewhere between Soul of our Saviour and Our God is a Great Big God

I used to love 'who put the colours in the rainbow"

I've just has a flashback to a song we used to sing at a youth group in the early 90s 'Oh it's great great, brill, brill, wicked wicked, skill skill, to have a friend like Jesus...'. Even then it screamed of adults trying too hard to be cool...

I looked it up to make sure I wasn't hallucinating.
It's real, and even on YouTube!

It reminds me of the Horne & Corden YPC sketches about Christian youth workers trying a little too hard to be relevant to young people. You can find them on YouTube.

Look at the work of Cjm music. (Led by Jo Boyce) Catholic musical liturgists who do a lot of work in schools

Also, what are the traditional RC Advent hymns? As an Anglican, I'd be following the liturgical seasons and choosing the traditional ones from Hymns Ancient & Modern. Do you have any older staff who can suggest the classics? I feel sad that most Christian/church schools don't use enough of these and children are not learning the hymns their parents know which doesn't make a traditional service any more accessible to them.

Most Catholic parents know the classics mentioned on this thread from the 1960's, 70's and 80's. ZNot the modern praise and worship like Matt Redman and rend collective, which would be completely new to 90% of Catholics (fab though). Not many traditional hymns will be known by parents.

Catholic advent hymns:
O come o come Emmanuel
Like a sea without a shore (maranatha)
The angel Gabriel from heaven came
Let all mortal flesh keep silent
On jordan's banks the baptist's cry.
(I wouldn't do the last two in a primary school)
There's 9 weeks till advent yet, though. And only 3 weeks of advent are in school time.

Our DS's school taught them 'My Jesus, My Saviour'. A couple of years ago we were at the all age service (family service) of our local CofE church and our vicar had it as one of the hymns.

Suddenly we were aware of DS and his friend moving. When we looked around about 10 kids (all from DS's school) were doing the same. They were doing the actions. Absolutely lovely to see them all spontaneously doing the actions. A few people, including the vicar, asked them to show them afterwards.

Here's the video (apart from the kneeling bit which is hard with 250 kids in assembly so they bow and do the sea rolling action standing up) Very easy hymn as it's just one verse repeated once so even the tots in reception sing it.

That might depend on the church and how often the parents attend mass. We have a mixture of traditional catholic, traditional but not necessarily catholic and modern.

Popular stuff from mass that isn’t shine Jesus shine:
One more step along the world I go
Give me joy in my heart
Follow me follow me
The summons
Christ be our light
I will follow you

There might be more John Bell, Marty Haugen, dan Shutte stuff that would work.

Harvest Samba and the one about the mass ending should not be introduced unless you particularly want an earworm.

She is now 14, going through a slightly self-conscious stage and easily embarrassed.
Her brothers find it hilarious, but are possibly slightly envious that it has 2 million views.

Last year her eldest brother secretly had the video cued on his phone ready to go, then before a family meal he asked to say grace, started with "I'd like to thank God for the harvest..." and pressed play. 😆

She survived it being shown at her primary school and at church and has managed not to die of embarrassment yet.
