PGCE in Drama

I've been wanting to do a pgce in drama for years but didn't have a maths GCSE at C and now I'm waiting on my result next week which means I might actually have a chance at getting a place on a course next year but after talking to some teacher family members recently they feel I'd be wasting my time as teacher positions in drama are becoming more and more scarce. Is it worth trying or should I look at other options now? I do know I need more schools experience as well but any other suggestions are gratefully received as I know that also being dyslexic will be an uphill battle for me. Thank you.

Lots of drama is taught in tandem with English

Hi, yes, I think you'd be better off looking at another subject as your specialism. In addition, are there many PGCE courses offering Drama? Hope it goes well with your maths GCSE!

I did my drama PGCE three years ago and i am very glad I did not give into this kind of scare tactic. My school has a booming drama department which has five full time drama teachers and is the most popular option subject at my school. I realise this isn’t the case everywhere however good drama teachers are what will keep good drama being taught. I would hate to teach any other subject this is my specialism, together with a strong network of drama teachers we are ensuring we are not made into English teachers. I trained with 30 teachers all of whom are in full time Positions. If you are passionate about drama don’t listen to the scaremongers join us it’s the most rewarding and exciting subject to teach!! you don’t need to compromise there are plenty of jobs and with the changing of the ofsted stance of not teaching to exams this year and focusing on creative and enriching subjects things are looking up for the first time in a while.

Can I do more than just drama if my degree isn't in it? There's a few pure drama pgce's local to me. Definitely don't think I could do English being dyslexic.

It’s quite a competitive subject and courses can be hard to get into I would call the course leader for the courses and ask them. Dyslexia shouldn’t hold you back as a teacher in fact it would make you excellent at helping your many dyslexic students you won’t be discriminated against because of this and shouldn’t make any difference to your choices
