Union fees

I've been sent a letter from the NEU with a revision of fees from September to November 2018. My dues have gone up to £48/month! Anyone else have this notification or is it just me? I can't afford so much a month but I don't want to be left without union protection. I've been teaching for nearly 9 years and have only had to call on the union once when there was a misunderstanding about an extension of my part time contract. What would you do?

Mines only 17 a month but it still feels like a lot 🤨. I certainly wouldn't be able to justify or afford £48 a month!

Look around for another union with lower fees. But I wouldn’t want to be without the back-up.

noblegiraffe · 12/08/2018 19:05

Are you sure that’s not quarterly? NASUWT is about £15 a month for full timers.

Feebeela · 12/08/2018 19:13

Definitely £48.82/month from September 2018-November 2018!

NEU website says £183 per annum for teachers, so just over £15-00 a month. Sounds like your bill is for Sept, Oct and Nov - email the. To check.

I am support and it's £102 pa. Is there a cheaper one?! I don't want to lose union membership.

JimmyGrimble · 15/08/2018 00:56

£102 per year is less than a tenner a month. How much cheaper would you like it to be?

DanSullivan · 15/08/2018 09:05

I haven’t heard from them yet, but I won’t be able to afford £48 a month! I was finding it hard to pay £21 a month! I love the NEU in a lot of ways, but they are by far the most expensive union. NUT were always the most expensive and the merger seems to have pushed up the fees for the ATL section.

Gardenpicnic · 15/08/2018 10:01

jimmygrimble when I joined it was on a £10 joining fee so that's probably why it seems a lot to me!

wentmadinthecountry · 15/08/2018 17:07

Yes,bill is for 3 months. I hope you are claiming tax relief on it as well.

Olivo · 21/08/2018 18:41

Mine is £19 per month with NEU. I am curious as to why they vary?

Waterlemon · 21/08/2018 18:46

the NEU varies because you pay a national and a local fee combined. The national fee is the same but the local fee varies. However I do think £48 is pretty extortionate!

watsmyname · 21/08/2018 18:57

Surely it's that u pay that for those three months for ur annual cover an nothing the rest of the year? Approx £140 sounds about right to me
