SENCO award and MA at same time??

Hi,

I'm interested on getting some perspective/ opinions on the idea of doing SENCO award whilst starting three year MA at the same time.

I would have a voluntary placement at a local school where I would undertake the tasks linked to assignments but no paid work commitments for a year. I have a lot of SEN/ inclusion experience and some additional SEN qualifications already.

The MA would be one day a week plus study- it would ultimately equip me to do another (complementary) role alongside a part time SENCO role.

Is this a crazy plan? I'm mid 40s, btw. My two DC are in their teens.
DH thinks I should commit to one but I am passionate about both!

Any thoughts?

I’m looking at doing the SENCO award and using the credits towards an MA the following year. You’d need to speak to the university to ask, I’ve found two places that would do this and one that wouldn’t.

What's the MA in? I did the SENCo award (finished in 2012), had a break, then did two further years of study until I had an MA in Special and Inclusive Education (finished in 2016). However, I already had a Masters in Education (finished in 2008).

Thanks both of you for your replies. It would be an entirely separate MA in the sense that the credits could not be transferred. The MA is in the field of children's mental health and would enable me to work in a clinical capacity. Long term, I would aim to have two part time jobs (SENCO and mental health). Sound ridiculous?

The SENCo award is pretty involved and there was a 5000 word dissertation as well. How many days are you required to be in school? Have you got family responsibilities that will take up your time?

I did my MEd while teaching full time and with two children under 7 and a useless ex-husband who didn't lift a finger so I believe it's possible, if you're determined enough. Also, you will have to pay the fees for both, I assume? My MA was around £1650 a year.
