Advice please from ks1 teachers

Should a mental starter be directly linked to the main LO in a maths lesson? Or can/should they be seperate? Ie, if starter is on tables, can LO be on place value?

Not helpful. Especially when typing single handedly with a toddler on my lap.

Usually when I planned lessons I would try to relate them, or if I couldn't because the lesson was shape exploration, for eg, then I would use the starter to reinforce something learned previously.
