Part time

I've been at my school since September and was happy to work full time however I have found the last few months very hard and feel like a terrible parent at times. I think to combat my current mental state I need to go part time to be able to give more time to my child. Am I entitled to ask for part time only having been at the school since September?

You can ask but they don't have to say yes. Ask quick though as they will be sorting staffing for next year. You might have left it a bit late...

You can ask but at this late stage they might say no. When I went down to 0.6 I asked in January and I thought that was cutting it a bit fine!

Thanks I was thinking it's late but if I don't ask I think I'll drive myself insane for not knowing. Next thing do I just need to write a letter to head to ask or to governors?

I wrote to the head. But remember you can only ask once in a 12 month period. If they say no, you cannot legally ask until this time next year. I might be inclined to think that I’d stick it out for one more year and use my 1 ask a year to ask in October for the following academic year when the notice period might make them more able to agree.

Ask now. They legally have to consider your application once a year but you can always ask twice. The worst they can do is ignore it.

I think it'd be fine now to ask but say if it's not possible for this September could it be considered for the next academic year. I don't know if you're primary or secondary but as a HoD I'd prefer to know now so that I could make plans. For instance, it might make a difference to any recruitment plans/ organising people's maternity leave cover etc if I knew someone wanted to go part-time.

I asked in May to go down to 0.8 for Sept for one year (so I had the option to go back up if I wanted to). It was accepted and I found the balance perfect for me.

kbb23 · 20/05/2018 21:48

Thanks everyone. I only want to go down to 0.8 so going to ask and see what happens. Nothing to lose now I guess. Any ideas of important things to add into my letter of request?

There’s advice on the TES forum on how to write your letter, how long they have to reply, when you can appeal etc.
You need to present a business case, so how will the other 0.2 be covered, whether you expect a full day off etc.

How did you get on @kbb23 ??

Rainbowfairy9 · 21/06/2018 07:50

Had my appeal yesterday so just a waiting game now to find out.
