SLTs latest Hmm

We clap three times. The students clap back three times then fall silent.

Fucking get me out of here.

Old school Grin

thechillandthedamp · 28/04/2018 15:41

Is it? From when? I’ve never come across this!

OP posts:
NellytheElephant18 · 28/04/2018 15:41

Works perfectly in our primary school. What is the problem?

MollyDaydream · 28/04/2018 15:42

From the 90s! Clap, clap, clap-clap-clap.

thechillandthedamp · 28/04/2018 15:42

That I’m not a sea lion? Hmm

I did my GCSEs in 1998 and never encountered this! Grin Thank Christ on the cross!

TeaforTiger · 28/04/2018 15:44

It works fine, I prefer it to the current trend of 'silent signals'.

thechillandthedamp · 28/04/2018 15:46

It’s born from my worst nightmares. Wtf are silent signals? What’s wrong with “okay, look this way now, quiet please” Grin

My son is in primary. His teacher calls 'Snap Crackle Pop' and they chorus back 'Everybody Stop!'

We came up with 'Goose Duck Duck' - 'Shut the Fuck Up' but I haven't tried it with Y11 yet

Ohyesiam · 28/04/2018 15:48

Helping out in my son’s class 3 years ago the teacher did this. She was really charismatic and boundaries and kind, and did lots of little things like that Andre kids responded really well.
I was totally in awe because my idea of hell is being in charge of a roomful of 7 years olds , and she made it look easyConfused

DamsonOnThisDress · 28/04/2018 15:49

We do this. Same clap. Clap clap clap-clap-clap. Kids have learned to clap while still continuing their cacophony unabated.

I think we need to mix it up a bit. Oh yes. So they have to listen to the clap pattern but I am not some sort of renegade maverick.

So i just go with. With my smarting, irrelevant hands.

GHGN · 28/04/2018 15:49

I was taught to do that when I was training. Other things such as counting down from 5 or putting hand up until everyone put their hand up too.

None worked paticularly well as they trained students to think that they can slowly give teacher attention. What do you do if they don’t clap back or stop what they are doing?

AHintOfStyle · 28/04/2018 15:50

Our school does this. Clap clap clap-clap-clap
A bit WTAF? to start with but it mostly works.

thechillandthedamp · 28/04/2018 15:50

I fucking hate it.

TeaforTiger · 28/04/2018 15:51

Wtf are silent signals?

You put your hand up and smile (you get pulled up for lack of smile) and wait for the children to put their hands up and stop talking.

thechillandthedamp · 28/04/2018 15:54

Jesus. Can’t you just briskly say ‘quiet!’ Grin

OP posts:
RebelRogue · 28/04/2018 15:55

@TeaforTiger and that "works"? Grin

JennyOnAPlate · 28/04/2018 15:58

My dc's school do this, as does the school where I work. It works in ks1.

AlonsoTigerHeart · 28/04/2018 15:58

My sons class goes by the the TA’s raised eyebrow method.
Never seen a bunch of 7 year olds fall silent so quick, none of them want her to break out the death stare.

I want her to come live with us

AuroraFloyd · 28/04/2018 16:03

I do the silent signals with year 7 and it works. By the time they get to years 9 and above though my smile turns to an angry glare.

But now I will have "goose duck duck" "shut the fuck up" in my head as I glare.

thechillandthedamp · 28/04/2018 16:06

I teach secondary. I am not doing it. Load of shite.

OP posts:
DamsonOnThisDress · 28/04/2018 16:14

Aaah, secondary. Very different. Works with our P1-4. P5+ are immune and you just end up with sore hands and broken spirit. I wouldn't attempt this in secondary.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 28/04/2018 16:24

Okay Primary year 2. We do 1,2,3 eyes on me and the children reply 1,2 eyes on you. We also do 'Ding dong to which the children respond 'class announcement '! A bit cheesy but the little ones like it and respond.

Oh and another one is to start speaking quietly saying 'If you can hear me click your fingers, keep going till all are clicking then tell them off for how long it took! I tend to just call out my class name and they stop but I am just mean!

Ellenripleysalienbaby · 28/04/2018 16:30

Love clap, clap, clap-clap-clap! And if you have to go onto a second one: clap... Clap clap-clap (do people know what I mean on that one?!)

Have done a few others things in my time, a bell, hands up, a tambourine. But I always find myself going back to clapping!

AsAProfessionalFekko · 28/04/2018 16:32

(Teacher) Clap Clap
(students) Clap-clap-clap

That's what DS used to do at school.
