Being kept after a mat contract

I love love my school. After six years I've hating teaching, I've found a school that has done a 180 for me - I love it. I'm on a six month mat contract which is being extended by an additional six months. I'd love to stay beyond that and whilst the head has made noises to suggest I can, obviously there's no guarantee. Has anyone been made permanent following a mat post? Did you have to formally apply?

I was, with a TLR, and I did not have to pay.
