Improving reading speed

Has anyone any tips on how to improve my child’s reading speed?

Year 2 and currently reading approx. 50 words per minute.

What are your motivations for doing so?
Why do you feel 50wpm isn't acceptable at Y2?
How is their comprehension?

His comprehension is very good.

Reading is becoming a task for him rather than something to enjoy. I think this has come about as during timed work (in preperation for SATs) he does not have enough time to complete the comprehension questions which frustrates him as as I say, his comprehension is very good.

I should add that I don’t mind how he does in SATs (I have older dc so have done the Y2 and Y6 SATs thing many times and have my own thoughts on them!) This would be for confidence and reading enjoyment.
