I need a cracking book to read to my Yr 2 class

Any suggestions?

Preferably funny as well as a good story. We’ve read The Twits, George’s Marvellous Medicine, Matthew Buzzington, Follow That Bus (that one was a mistake, I’d loved it as a child but it was dreadful to read outloud!) Mr Gum and the Dancing Bear. Any suggestions on a really great book for this term, it’s my last term with this class and they love stories. No David Walliams (it has to have a happy ending!). Thanks!

I am reading The Bolds to thw DC. They're yr 3 and 7. I love it and have bought the next two. The first book is fairly innocent, apart from some humans getting eaten. As far as I'm aware, there's three books in the series but you could stop after the first.

I had a bunch of 7 year olds rolling around on the floor with tears running down their faces whilst reading "The Bread Bin" by Joan Aitkin. It's really great to read out loud!

Fab selection on A Mighty Girl website. (Link is to American site, but once you have title / author yu could get elsewhere). If you are on Facebook and like their page, they give you regular links to cracking stories. Today's was about British secret Agent Phyllis Latour Doyle, and a bit old for Year two, but a couple of days ago, it talked about "Me...Jane" - the story of Jane Goodhall - this one is mainly a picture book recommended for ages 3+, but then it links to various other stories with different age recommendations. Well worth keeping in touch with.
Yesterday it linked to 'Wonder Woman, The Story of the Amazon Princess' which is recommended for ages 3 - 7. Smile

Don't Cook Cinderella.

My children loved it.

VodkaRevelation · 08/04/2018 19:17

The Christmasaurus or The Creakers, both by Tom Fletcher. So, so good.

0ellenbrody0 · 08/04/2018 19:21

MY yr2 class loved The Wombles by Elizabeth Beresford

Mr Gum books are brilliant and the author, Andy Stanton was immensely kind to DS at a book festival when DS was too shy to participate. He send him a signed copy of his next book and a personal hand written letter..

when i was 7 my class teacher used to read us stories about "little Pete". I have no idea if these are still around - we are talking many decades ago lol. when I left that school she gave me the book as a leaving gift because I loved them so much. I still have it

Another vote for Gobbolino the witch's cat!

applesauce1 · 08/04/2018 19:31

I spend a good few months every year reading The Indian In The Cupboard to my Year 2s. It was read to me when I was a child, and I absolutely loved it.
The children call for, "one more chapter!" Every time I close the book, and it keeps them all on the edge of their seats. It appeals to boys and girls and lots of opportunities to discuss vocab.

The Sophie stories by Dick King-Smith

The turbulent term of Tyke Tyler

It's out of print now, but you can still get second hand copies and it's hands down the funniest book I've ever read. Nicobobinus by Terry Jones.

catkind · 08/04/2018 20:01

Second The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark. DS adored it at that age, it was bedtime story for months on end. Or anything Jeremy Strong - maybe The Indoor Pirates or one of the 100 mile an hour dog series. Or original Winnie the Pooh?

LakeFlyPie · 08/04/2018 20:30

DS (7) absolutely loved Frank Cottrell Boyce's Sputnik's Guide to Life on Earth - it was a joy to read too

Our yr2s have been reading the owl who is afraid of the dark, and before that the hodgeheg by dick King smith. They loved both.

The frog and toad series were great (till they were put on the SATs booklist)

What about some of the classics -
Heidi
The secret garden
Black beauty
