I need a cracking book to read to my Yr 2 class

Any suggestions?

Preferably funny as well as a good story. We’ve read The Twits, George’s Marvellous Medicine, Matthew Buzzington, Follow That Bus (that one was a mistake, I’d loved it as a child but it was dreadful to read outloud!) Mr Gum and the Dancing Bear. Any suggestions on a really great book for this term, it’s my last term with this class and they love stories. No David Walliams (it has to have a happy ending!). Thanks!

Rosie Revere Engineer is lovely. Might be a tad young as it’s a rhyming picture book but they have activity books for that age group to encourage invention/making. There’s 2 others in the series too which could help bulk out time - Ada Twist Scientist & Iggy Peck Architect

Have you read them the Magic Faraway Tre books? they have changed the names to Rick and Franny and the fairy is now called Silky. Haven't read it to my Y1s yet as usually save it for when they are ready to not need to see pictures, but they usually love it.

Dear Hound by Jill Murphy is a fabulous book.

Stig of the Dump

What theme are you doing in humanities?

SofiaAmes · 07/04/2018 06:39

My kids LOVED the Doctor Doolittle books at that age.

George Speaks by Dick King Smith?

A vote for the Treehouse series by Australian author Andy Griffith and illustrated by Terry Denton. Very funny, very well paced stories (it never stops!) and happy endings every time. I personally love 72-Storey the best, but starting at 13-Storey might make more sense. These guys really understand 7 year olds!!

The secret diary of pig series. Especially if you love doing voices and accents and don't mind saying fart!

Sorry clicked too soon. I have read them to my class and in key stage assemblies and the children love them. Many bought their own copies and we are waiting anxiously for book 5! The author is Emer Stamp.

DD's teacher has just read them The Secret of Platform 13 and they all loved it.

spanky2 · 07/04/2018 20:05

Mr Gum. It's written so you can do voices for each character. I loved reading these to my dcs.

What did silky used to be called in faraway tree?? My dd5 loves this book as I did when I was young. Wind in the willows is going down well.

Ohyesiam · 07/04/2018 20:21

Silky from THe Faraway Tree was called Silky in the 70’s when I read them. Rick and Franny is an improvement thoughSmile

I loved the faraway tree books as a child and all of my children have too. Another favourite is The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark. My son is y2 and whilst it's quite a short book, he's loving it. Also, it has nice short chapters that don't drag on forever and the chapters all have very definite start and end rather than cliffhangers which may be frustrating for 6/7 year olds.

The water horse - dick King smith

JiltedJohnsJulie · 07/04/2018 20:26

DD suggests Dogger mainly because she loved it in Y2 Smile

Lowdoorinthewal1 · 07/04/2018 20:26

Lord, I hated Mr Gum

My vote would be either Gobbolino or Mr Majieka depending on how emotionally smart they are.

Lowdoorinthewal1 · 07/04/2018 20:27

Or a Secret Seven

Taffeta · 07/04/2018 20:30

DDs favourite in Y2 was Morpurgo’s version of Pinocchio

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 07/04/2018 20:31

Dd is year 2 and has suggested the three little wolves and the big bad pig. Her teacher read it and she loved it.

Newkidontheblock22 · 07/04/2018 20:33

Definitely the the treehouse series - 13 Storey Treehouse would be best to start with.
They are really funny and have a good pace too.

lorisparkle · 07/04/2018 21:30

My ds loved the Winnie the witch books. Some are picture books and some are longer stories.
